Job Description
The Town of Vail is now hiring a Part-Time Library Associate (24 - 29 hours per week) to work at the Vail Public Library.The Library Associate I works designated hours on the Service Desk each week and also fills in, whenever possible, for other staff members. Associate also handles a variety of Reference, Reader’s Advisory and Circulation-related duties. This Associate also handles other related library duties, as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides exceptional customer service to all library customers while working at the Service Desk. Handles check-ins, check-outs, renewals, Reader’s Advisory, Reference assistance, and provides Vail visitors and guests with local tourist information, etc. Works additional hours at Service Desk on an as-needed basis.
- This position provides general Circulation, Reference and Reader’s Advisory service assistance to patrons of all ages. Participates in a variety of tasks at the Service Desk including, but not limited to, entering and analyzing Circulation data, processing Membership applications, and explaining library lending policies and procedures. Assesses patron needs and instructs them in making effective use of library resources. Assists patrons with the use of the Internet, online databases, eBook devices, etc. Handles other related library duties, as assigned.
- Processing incoming mail, displays new magazines/newspapers as they arrive and removes the old issues. Reference side of Service Desk handles the magazines and Circulation side of Service Desk handles the newspapers.
- Responsible for processing the FTS overdue notices on mornings when scheduled to open Circulation side of Service Desk. Involves checking the shelves for overdue items, calling any Vail patrons and mailing notices to other Marmot library patrons.
- Responsible for processing FTS holds (Marmot and Prospector) on mornings when scheduled to open Reference side of Service Desk. Involves locating the correct email, pulling items from the shelves and preparing them for transit to other libraries.
- The position, Library Associate I, requires more skill than a Library Assistant who primarily works the Service Desk. Library Associate I’s, in addition to being well-versed in working the Service Desk, are each responsible for a variety of off-desk duties. This particular position is responsible for the following:
- Ordering the library’s general office supplies.
- Working on repairs and physical processing of library materials.
- Working on Billing and Collections for library patrons who have not returned their borrowed materials.
- Performs duties in other areas of the library and participates in library special projects as needed, e.g., dusty books, shelving and shelf-reading.
- Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
- Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Evening and weekend shifts required.

In addition candidates should must meet the following requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Reference & Circulation-related functions
- Working knowledge of computer applications for library services
- Ability to work effectively & communicate with library staff as well as patrons in a pleasant, courteous manner
- Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies in Public Service in a library setting
- Ability to work well with patrons of all ages, both individually and in groups
- Knowledge of standard library procedures, current info technology, database search capabilities, library procedures and policies.
Education, Experience and Certificates
- High School Diploma
- Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in a customer service environment required
- experience in a public library setting highly preferred
