Job Description

Position Summary:

The Reference and Instruction Librarian performs a broad range of professional responsibilities of librarianship serving the information needs of students, faculty, and the residents of the communities served by the College. Responsibilities include the design, development, delivery, and assessment of information literacy instruction in on-ground, hybrid, and online courses; reference services; individual research consultations; liaison responsibilities for academic departments and programs; and collection development and maintenance. 

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Example of Job Duties:

Under the Director of Library Services, the Librarian is responsible for providing useful and helpful support to the learning mission of the College through effective performance in these essential areas:  

  • Designing, delivering, coordinating, and assessing the impact of the information literacy instruction program, on-ground and online.
  • Staffing the library service desk providing point-of-need reference services, consultations, basic technical support services on-ground and in virtual environments, and material circulation.
  • Designing, editing, and delivering physical and virtual learning objects, videos, tutorials, and research guides.
  • Selecting accessible library materials to support the curriculum.
  • Serving as the lead librarian and overseeing the library in the absence of the director of library services.
  • Experience in an academic setting providing direct service to students and faculty.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings.  These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

$67,587 approximate annual* plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits. Salary Range for this level is $67,587-$122,795. (*New hires to State employment start at minimum of salary range).

Minimum Qualifications:

An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Studies or appropriately related discipline with one (1) or more years of related experience; or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties. 

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Experience in information literacy instruction incorporating emerging information technologies and creating active learning environments on-ground and online
  • Experience providing reference services and/or individual research consultations
  • Experience providing - technical support in common software applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating online learning objects including video, tutorials, and research guides
  • Experience in instructional design, student learning, and assessment
  • Experience with creating accessible content with WCAG and universal design for learning principles
  • Experience with the ACRL Framework, OER, and Creative Commons licenses
  • Experience in an academic setting providing direct service to students and faculty.
  • Prior experience working in a community college.

The Community

Quinebaug Valley Community College, one of twelve community colleges consolidating into the Connecticut State Community College, is located in the "quiet corner" of northeastern Connecticut.  Our main campus, in Danielson, is located in a rural area with several small towns and shopping areas nearby; our satellite campus is located in Willimantic. Big cities are close by: we are 40 minutes from Providence, 60 minutes from Hartford, and 90 minutes from Boston.
