Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Collection Development Specialist is responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating a balanced Library collection with prudent acquisition of materials within budget for all ages and collections. Keeps abreast of changing demands and works with other library staff in assessing Library’s collection needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Selects new materials across formats for assigned collection areas and directs the purchase of replacement materials for those collections. Assists with the selection of any materials, across formats and audiences.
  • Utilizes vendor services and professional tools to evaluate and select materials and resources in various physical and digital formats across age groups.
  • Assures that items are ordered in a timely manner and in quantities that meet demand.
  • Tracks spending and stays within established budget.
  • Researches and analyzes borrowing activity, usage trends, and potential materials or services to recommend appropriate acquisitions.
  • Dedicated to providing a diverse and inclusive collection representing multiple viewpoints.
  • Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned.
  • Stays current with library and collection trends.
  • Assists with merchandising of entire collection.
  • Oversees weeding of entire collection.
  • Monitors hold lists, material requests, and other collection related reports.
  • Periodically works on-desk hours at all service points.
  • Responds to questions and concerns with staff and customers with a positive approach and flexible mindset.
  • Creates positive experiences for library patrons and staff by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both public and staff areas.
  • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, coworkers, and volunteers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Uses relevant computer software to access information, answer questions, and perform daily tasks.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to give presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, works effectively with individuals of diverse cultures, communication styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Service-oriented with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of the elements that make up a relevant, popular, high-interest public library collection, including broad-based collection development practices and current trends in selection, ordering, patron driven programs, and vendor services.
  • Knowledge of weeding standards.
  • Knowledge of standard reference and readers’ advisory practices.
  • Uses time efficiently; develops realistic action plans; ability to work independently on multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Uses problem solving skills in determining priorities, finding timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of the Library’s collection needs.
  • Successfully leads and/or collaborates on projects and programs with staff members.
  • Takes responsibility for consistent completion and follow-up on all tasks.
  • Responsive to change and demonstrates adaptability.
  • Maintains a positive approach while doing daily tasks and when faced with adversity.
  • Ability to work in a pleasant, professional and effective manner with patrons, staff, coworkers within and across departments within the library and the city is required.
  • Demonstrates a broader understanding of the job and looks for ways to improve Library services and support coworkers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library and Information Science degree (ALA accredited college/university).
  • Minimum two years of experience in a library, bookstore, or publishing setting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Communicate with staff and customers in person and over the phone.
  • May require either being in a stationary position or moving about for prolonged periods.
  • Moves equipment or library materials weighing up to 35 lbs.

SALARY

$50,409 - $75,613 annually
