Job Description

NEWPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:  Reference Librarian – Part-time, eighteen (18) hours per week. Reports to the Head of Reference and Adult Services.

The Newport Public Library is seeking an energetic individual with a strong commitment to public service, and who can work independently with minimal supervision for the position of part-time reference librarian. Hourly pay is commensurate with qualifications.

Duties:

1)      Assist in the provision of reference services in the adult area.

A.      Provide one-on-one assistance to patrons regarding use of library resources including the library catalog and electronic databases.

B.      Provide Reader’s Advisory to patrons using a variety of adult resources both online and in print.

C.      Provide referral services to meet informational needs outside the scope of the library’s resources.

D.      Assist in answering inquiries by email, text, and phone as well as in-person.

2)      Provide basic technical assistance to patrons using Library equipment and apps.

A.      Assist patrons with “how to" questions in MS Office, Google Drive, email, printing, and mobile devices.

B.      Assist patrons with Overdrive, Hoopla, and other Library apps on their mobile devices.

C.      Perform basic troubleshooting on computers utilized by patrons in the adult services area.

3)      Assist with programming in adult services.

A.      Plan and facilitate book group meetings including making book selections in both fiction and non-fiction.

B.      Deliver library programs both in-person and online.

C.      Help promote adult programs and services in patron interactions.

D.      Assist with producing promotional materials for Library programs in both print and digital formats.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1)       Excellent customer service skills.

2)       Passionate about reading and sharing book recommendations with others.

3)       Ability to work collaboratively as a team player.

4)       Ability to work a rotating schedule including evenings and alternate Saturdays.

5)       Exercise sufficient judgment to perform the job.

6)       Perform the job satisfactorily under the stressors of the position with minimal supervision.

7)       Communicate easily and effectively in group and individual situations using oral and written communication skills.

8)       Willingness to learn new technology and share knowledge with others.

9)       Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Head and the Library Director.

10)   Knowledge of Sierra (the statewide ILS) and Zoom is a plus.

Qualifications:

1)       Bachelor's degree from an accredited program.  Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred.

2)       Library work experience and public service or experience required.

3)       Students and expected graduates of library school programs are encouraged to apply.

Hours:

18 hours per week, including two nights and rotating Saturdays. Opportunities for Sunday hours in season. The hours are assigned by the Department Head in consultation with the Library Director. Hours are set with the best interests of the Library of paramount concern and may change to suit departmental needs.
