Job Description

Distinguishing Features of Work

Provide adolescents with information, education, and recreation at the Wichita Public Library! We have an immediate opening for a teen services librarian specializing in services to ages 12-18. This position is part of the Youth Services team at the Advanced Learning Library in Wichita’s vibrant Delano neighborhood.

Our successful candidate is a person who demonstrates a strong commitment to working with teens, facilitates engaging learning opportunities, and able to skillfully and enthusiastically design and present programming for youth in middle and high school. The Teen Services Librarian is part of the Youth Services team, and will be called upon to perform readers’ advisory, assist customers with their accounts, and to provide coverage as needed in the fast-paced environments of both the Children’s Pavilion and Teen Pavilion. 

This is an exempt position.  Below is a typical work schedule which includes working one evening a week and one weekend a month. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility should schedule changes be needed to meet the demands of the workgroup.

Tues 11:15-8:15 PM
Friday 9:15-6:15 PM
Every 1st Sat 9:15-6:15 PM
Every 1st Sunday 12:45-5:15 PM

The starting salary based on experience and qualifications will be $43,615 - $55,000, plus an excellent benefits package.

Examples of Work Performed

  • planning and presenting programs for teens at the Advanced Learning Library
  • demonstrating library use and teaching information literacy skills to student groups visiting the library on tours
  • promoting Library materials and services through displays and outreach activities
  • distributing supplies and taking requests from branch libraries
  • weeding and evaluating the Teen Pavilion collection
  • partnering with peers throughout the Library system to develop a master schedule of programs and events
  • assisting customers with their accounts, public computing, and electronic resources
  • offering readers’ advisory and booktalk presentations to youth, their caregivers, and teachers
  • participating on Library teams and with system special projects
  • leading the youth services team in the absence of the section manager
  • organizing the work of the Teen Advisory Board

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge of library methods, principles, and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of reference materials and tools of research.
  • Considerable knowledge of reader interest and of books and authors.
  • Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations and ability to access, interpret, and record information using a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous and tactful relationships with associates and library patrons.
  • Ability to: push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manually operated office tools and supplies such as scissors, staplers, glue, and/or typewriter; hold, inspect, turn single pages, and read books weighing up to fifteen pounds with pages made from papers of a wide range of quality and thickness.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution; outstanding communication, public presentation, and organizational skills, a strong customer service commitment; knowledge of teen literature and principles of adolescent development; and an advanced level of proficiency with technology, including mobile and personal computing, integrated library systems, and media production. Ability to independently execute on multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision and direction is a must. Evening and weekend shifts in rotation with other public service staff are expected. Be able to drive to travel to different worksites throughout the work day when job assignment requires; therefore will need reliable transportation.  Residency within thirty minutes lawful driving time of the corporate limits of the City of Wichita will be required of the successful applicant. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
