Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a world-class scientific research organization.  NREL is the only U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research.  The NREL Library is currently looking for an experienced cataloger to help us produce original catalog records for a collection of digitized technical reports.  The goal of this project is to make this historical content discoverable to our researchers through our online catalog.  This position will require 15-20 hours/week for approximately three months.  All work can be performed remotely, if desired.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Create complete and accurate original records for technical reports using a pre-established Alma template
  • Catalog within the Ex Libris Alma environment
  • Move files around within a pre-established organization scheme on the library’s file server
  • Work closely with two staff members to share and divide workload.

Basic Qualifications

This role can be hired as a level I or II.

Level II:

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of technical standards, principles, theories and techniques. Frequent application of industry concepts and principles. General knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Level I:

Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Limited use and/or application of technical principles, theories and concepts. Limited knowledge of industry practices and standards. Basic knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Original cataloging experience
  • Experience using Ex Libris Alma
  • Thorough knowledge of MARC
  • Familiarity with AACR2 cataloging standards and rules
  • Able to work independently and remotely

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience cataloging gray literature is a plus
  • Masters of Library Science preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $60,400 - $99,700
