Job Description

Do you love working with teens and adults? Are you good at on-the-go problem solving? We’re looking for someone who is excited about library Summer of Discovery programming and an ace at volunteer management to be our next temporary Summer of Discovery Program Coordinator. OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE      

The Temporary Program Coordinator’s will support the library staff to provide a vibrant, engaging, and fun Summer of Discovery program.  The primary responsibilities of the Temporary Program Coordinator will be to coordinate and manage Summer of Discovery volunteers, especially teen volunteers, and volunteer-run activities to ensure successful engagement of the public in the program. The temporary staff member will play an important role in coordinating, training and motivating volunteers to inspire children, teens, and adults to read and be involved in summer library programs. 

Boulder Public Library’s Summer of Discovery program attracts more than 3,000 children, teens and adults who spend the summer discovering the library and participating in a variety of events, while progressing toward reading goals and receiving fun incentives.  Volunteers are a key part of the team that engages the public in the program by registering and motivating the people as well as giving out prizes. Approximately 75% of the 100 volunteers who help implement the program each summer are teens.

Required Schedule:  This is a temporary minimum of ten-week job starting in May and up to 40-hours per week, which may include one weekend day and one evening shift per week. The Temporary Program Coordinator will fully participate in the program and commit to the required schedule for the duration of program, at least through July 31.

MINIMUM JOB COMPETENCIES:

Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

Excellent customer service skills, comfortable speaking in a friendly manner to a variety of people, including adults, teens, and children of all ages.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience with database systems such as Beanstack and Count Me In Boulder

PREFERED COMPETENCIES:

Volunteer management experience.

Experience working with a diversity of persons.

Experience coordinating people, ideally teens or teen volunteers, in a professional setting such as a club, a sorority/fraternity, summer camps, etc. 

Enjoys and is committed to contributing positively to a team.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:

The goals and the vision for the program.

The inner workings of the Boulder Public Library.

Techniques for working with volunteers.

Volunteer and library program databases.

Working with a disperse staff across locations and shift times.

Excellent problem-solving skills, initiative, and resourcefulness.

Professional communications experience such making short informative videos and writing short, informative emails, texts and social media posts.

Detail oriented and highly organized.
