LIBRARIAN III – ADULT SERVICES SUPERVISOR

Job Title: Librarian III – Adult Services Supervisor

Closing Date:  Open Until FilledGENERAL PURPOSE 

Performs a variety of professional librarian and administrative duties as needed to carry out the day-to-day operations of the town public library, including, collection management, reference services, circulation, technical and public services, program planning and facilitating and overall management of clerks and volunteers as well as advanced clerical operations including processing timesheets, approving time off requests and producing a working schedule for both clerks and volunteers.

Works under the general supervision of Library Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Directly supervises library clerks and library volunteers and provides supervisory support to other staff members as needed.


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Coordinates team building functions; makes decisions affecting the overall operation of the library based upon established guidelines or precedents.

Manages and coordinates the development of public service operations; implements action plans to carry out designed strategies; assures compliance with established policies and procedures; oversees ongoing operations; monitors functions and processes; resolves conflicts and manages problem-solving procedures, patron, individual and team; organizes and manages large projects affecting various departments of the library, such as deselection processes; coordinates the use of resources allocated to project; evaluates information and data needed to make effective decisions related to patron concerns, materials selection and related issues; evaluates and assesses team decisions to assure consistency and quality; determines priorities affecting the allocation of resources, including personnel, facilities and time.

Performs more complex public service functions related to reference; receives and responds to detailed reference questions; utilizes all reference avenues of the library in searching and locating information and selection materials; recommends materials to patrons; initiates actions such as placing holds, calling on loans, etc.; provide simple training to patrons in use of computer to locate collection materials; may monitor e-mail addresses to check for memos, directives and information; directs or coordinates special reference services, i.e., complex reference research, preparation of bibliographies, exhibits, notices, conducting library tours, etc.

Monitors subordinate performance; establishes standards and goals in cooperation with employees; evaluates progress and success; makes recommendations affecting employee selection, retention, advancement, discipline and termination; participates in the selection processes for new employees and promotions; assists in the training and coaching of new public service Librarians.

Participates as a member of the library management team; coordinates special projects; contributes perceptions and recommendations related to organizational purpose and mission; participates in problem solving and strategic planning processes; participates in public program planning and facilitating.

PREFRRERD QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited University and Five (5) years of library experience, of which three (3) years in an administrative or supervisory capacity is preferred;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with bachelor's degree in library science, literature, liberal arts, humanities or a closely related field;and Three (3) years of library experience, of which two (2) years in an administrative or supervisory capacity is preferred;orAn equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of theories, principles and objectives of library service; management concepts and methods related to team building, empowerment and participative leadership; information services and collection development; current trends and developments in library services; human resource management and principles of supervision; training and staff utilization principles; legal and political issues affecting library operations and management; budget development and fiscal responsibility requirements; principles of negotiation and problem solving; library reference, circulation, acquisition, processing, cataloging and classification methods, practices and procedures;  Dewey Decimal System;  various areas of specialization of material related to different patron groups;  reader interest levels; interpersonal communication skills;  software applications, i.e., WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Netscape;  various types of inter-related equipment, specifications and compatibility; specialized library system elements, i.e., OCLC database, INNOPAC, OPAC, MARC records, subject headings, authority records, Boolean searching, etc.

Working knowledge of computer technologies affecting the future of library operations and services.

Ability to direct the work of others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; implement cooperative problem-solving processes; anticipate changing needs for services and facilities; operate personal computer and various software applications for word processing and spread sheet information; access e-mail and effectively function in a computerized communications environment.

Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls.  Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting and reaching.  Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of essential functions.  Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity also utilized in performance of daily tasks.  Occasional exposure to changing environmental conditions due to local automobile travel. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
