Position Description

Title: Children and Youth Services Librarian

Summary: The Children’s Librarian is responsible for the planning and operation of all library services for children of all ages and young adults.

Responsibilities:

1.   Planning and Management

A.    Plans, develops and recommends goals and objectives designed to fulfill the goals and objectives of the library, meets expectations of those served and maintains efficient and effective services

B.    Assesses and anticipates the needs and expectations of Children’s Room patrons.  Plans and recommends procedures and programs consistent with these expectations

C.    Encourages the expansion of children’s services and programs consistent with community needs and library resources

D.    Consistently manages the Children’s room in accordance with approved library policies and procedures

E.     Recommends the level of technology necessary to ensure that collection and service goals are met, collaborates on departmental technology development, provides input for library web page and social media

2.    Collection Development:

A.    Provides ongoing collection assessment

B.    Participates in establishing Library collection development policy as it relates to children  and young adults

C.    Plans and develops multi-formatted collections to meet the informational and recreational needs of  children in the community

D.    Selects, balances, and weeds the collection

E.     Maintains awareness of current formats and trends in children’s services

F.     Demonstrates a knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites and other electronic media, and other materials that contribute to a diverse, current, and relevant children’s collection

3.   Service Development:

A.    Provides ongoing child and youth services needs assessment

B.    Plans, publicizes and schedules story hours and other age appropriate programs

C.    Plans and participates in community outreach through tours of the library, visits to community schools and other agencies to increase public awareness of the Library and its resources

D.    Provides full reference and reader’s advisory service to children and young adult patrons

E.     Provides instruction to groups and individuals, both formally and informally, regarding the use of library materials and services

F.     Is responsible for keeping current and maintaining technology

G.    Promotes the department by helping to maintain a web and social media presence

H.    Encourages and instructs children in online resources

4.     Personnel Management:

A.    Provides ongoing personnel needs assessment

B.    Provides professional support, supervision and training for Children’s Room staff

C.    Develops, maintains and expands skill levels by participating in and attending relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences

D.    Develops and maintains currency in the field by reading professional journals and literature on child development, literacy, children’s library services and technology

5.     Reporting Responsibilities

A.    Reports to the Director on all Children’s Room plans, activities and services

B.    Reports operating status and performance against approved plans and budgets

C.    Compiles monthly and annual narrative and statistical reports for the Children’s Room

D.    Prepares and submits other reports as requested by the Director

6.     Organizational relationships

A.    Cooperates as a team member with all Library staff in performing duties essential to the achievement of efficient Library operations

B.    Reports to the Library Director

C.    Develops  goals and tasks for children’s room staff

D.    Works with Library Director to access and monitor children’s room staff

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A.    Extensive knowledge of theories, tools, and current trends in library service to children, developmental reading, children’s literature, and programming

B.    Demonstrate positive support/service attitude to effectively meet, communicate with, and serve children of varied backgrounds and ages, educators, caregivers and other library patrons

C.    Knowledge of materials and services for children

D.    Ability to plan, execute, and evaluate children’s programs

E.     Working knowledge of personal computers and applications including the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic reference sources

F.     Knowledge of management theories and practice, including supervision

G.    Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as effective oral and written presentation skills. 

H.    Ability to collaborate effectively with all staff to achieve departmental and Library goals

I.      Self-motivation and ability to exercise sufficient initiative and independent judgment to perform the job satisfactorily

J.      Ability to perform satisfactorily under the stressors of the position

K.    Ability to perform the job in a reasonable time and in a manner which achieves reasonable Library performance and quality standards

L.     Ability to perform the job without disrupting the work of others

Qualifications

A.    Masters Degree from an ALA accredited program in library science required

B.    Experience in supervising children’s and youth services library required

C.    Knowledge of child development, developmental reading, children’s literature, and children’s programming required

D.    Physically must be able to walk up and down stairs and lift 10-25 pounds.

The Community

The George Hail Library in Warren, RI is seeking an exceptional candidate to fill our position of Youth Services Librarian.  This is a full-time position that includes health and dental coverage, vacation and sick leave as well as a matching retirement fund after a year.  The salary ranges from $40,000 to $45,500 per year to start depending on experience and education.  In order to apply you must have completed your Masters in Library Science from an accredited college.

George Hail Library is a unique and wonderful place to work.  The historical building from 1889 is nestled in the heart of Warren, a bustling community filled with cultural venues and restaurants.  It is close to the water and with its historical homes, Warren has a wonderful charm and unique atmosphere. 

The Youth Services position is a professional position.  Our children’s area which was added on in the early 1980’s has just had a new carpet and some updated shelving installed.  It has a performance area for story times that includes a large screen TV, tables for activities and a corner for older children.
