Job Description

The freeze is over! As a result of budgetary restraints this position was frozen in 2020, but due to promised funding this position rejoins our staff in July 2022.

Position summary:

This Head of Washington Memorial Library will manage daily library branch operations. Of utmost importance is exceptional patron service and commitment to effective library services, programs, and technology. The Head of Washington is responsible for upholding all MGRL policies for staff and patrons. This position is responsible for budgeting, collections, and required statistical and financial reports.

The successful candidate will have experience and/or knowledge of a variety of library services and activities. The position requires a high degree of flexibility to produce services that are relevant and accessible to each segment of the population that we serve. They will build community relationships and contribute to community goals.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages four supervisors who supervise a total of 23 employees in the Genealogical & Historical Room, the Reference Department, Circulation, and the Children's Room. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans and implements new information technologies to meet changing needs.
  • Participates in professional conferences and workshops to keep informed of changes in the library field.
  • Oversees technical training for automated library systems.
  • Conducts public relations programs to increase public awareness and support of library programs and services.
  • Prepares budget, program, annual, and special reports for the Director.
  • Administers the department's budget, develops new funding sources, and engages in grant writing.
  • Conducts reference interviews with patrons to address special research needs.
  • Provides advice and consultation to Director concerning the collection development policy and long-range planning.
  • Maintains communication with the local community to develop effective library services.
  • Interprets, implements, and recommends library policies and procedures.
