Position Information

This is a full time, permanent position providing professional level support assisting customers using library resources, computers and conducting research. This position will be responsible for developing and conducting library programs and training as directed; they will also be responsible for assisting with collection and library resource management as assigned.

 This position functions as the on-site Professional Librarian and person in charge in the absence of the Branch Supervisor. In addition to assisting with Adult Services as needed.  This position may be hired to work primarily at a specific facility with a primary focus but will substitute at other locations as needed, and depending upon staffing needs may be re-assigned to a different primary facility.


  Locations:

  • Will work primarily at an assigned location, hours may change based on business need.  May be required to occasionally to substitute or split time at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.
  • May be asked at times to work at other Aurora Library locations if staffing needs require and will conduct/attend occasional programs at schools or other venues for outreach events.

This posting will be used to fill vacancies at a variety of locations, to include:

  • Split position between Chambers Plaza Library (1551 Chambers Rd.) and Hoffman Library (1298 Peoria St)
  • Tallyn’s Reach Library (23911 E. Arapahoe Rd.)

Schedule: 

  • Tallyn's schedule will primarily be Monday-Friday
  • Chambers/Hoffman's schedule will primarily be Tuesday-Saturday


The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Functions as the on-site Professional Librarian and person in charge overseeing staffing and facility customer related functions in the absence of the Branch Supervisor
  • Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email
  • Develops, plans, oversees, and conducts programs on a wide range of topics for adults, teens, and children
  • Develops, plans, and participates in outreach events that may include attending fairs/events, and/or speaking to community groups or school children
  • Assists with Circulation services and collecting statistics
  • Coordinate volunteers
  • Assists with the development and implementation of staff training
  • Assists the Branch Supervisor in preparing staff evaluations
  • Provides input for the development of policies and procedures
  • May work on joint regional library service committees and user groups representing the Aurora Public Library
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly)
  • Performs high level reference searches using library resources, on-line databases and other reputable sources
  • Assists with the development of customer support
  • Assists with the identification and selection of e-resources, virtual web resources, etc.
  • Assists customers with accessing and using library resources (books, databases, computers, etc.) and computer questions related to Microsoft Office products, internet navigation, email services, third party web sites and other software applications on public computers.
  • Assists customers and helps develop protocol for e-book services, devices and trouble shooting
  • Assists in collection/inventory management duties that may include weeding, sorting, shelving, cataloging assistance, interlibrary loan, and database input/maintenance when directed by supervisor.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 
Education:

  • Master's Degree or current enrollee in Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program.

A Master's Degree in another field with relevant library experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • At least 6 months professional library experience, or 2 years library experience
  • Lead experience preferred

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service; library classification system; Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions; basic trouble-shooting in computer operation.

Abilities:

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner; communicate effectively in writing; use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine; perform basic mathematical calculations; follow oral and written instructions; work shifts, including some nights, and weekends.  Ability to speak a second language a plus.


Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required:

  • Colorado driver's license with good driving history.  This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:
 

  • Light physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment
  • Vision for reading and interpreting reports and data analysis and preparation
  • Frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Considerable walking and standing; frequent pushing, pulling, and climbing

Work Environment:
 

  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; occasionally works nights and weekend

Equipment Used:
 

  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, and copy/fax machines
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
