OVERVIEW OF POSITION

Provides professional level support primarily assisting staff with library technology and software issues. Manages and maintains library’s technology collections, makes recommendations about new technology to purchase including Maker Spaces, copy machines and other technology specific to Aurora Public Library. Will act as primary staff contact for issues with ILS. May interface with the city of Aurora’s IT staff as well. Secondary focus will be training staff on updates of current library software and hardware. Position may be hired to work primarily at a specific facility, but will substitute at other locations as needed. Depending upon staffing needs may be re-assigned to a different primary facility

PRIMARY WORK LOCATION:
Central Library (Aurora Public Library)

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary service area focus of this position is: Technical Services Department at Central Library.
  • Performs a variety of library functions under professional supervision of the Technical Services Manager.
  • Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email.
  • Maintain the Integrated Library System, currently Sierra.
  • Provides input for the development of policies and procedures related to technology, including software, online tools, and mobile devices and public computer sessions.
  • Develops plans, oversees, conducts and assists with evaluation of library technology use and efficiency, makes recommendations for new items to purchase and implement.
  • Writes RFPs and helps manage vendor selection and subsequent contracts for library hardware and software.
  • Secondary duties include development and implementation of staff training related to technical services
  • Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities as needed to maintain library operations, including assisting at other departments’ service desks, providing roving customer service, and periodic supervisory duties of the entire facility.
  • May work on joint regional library service committees and user groups representing the Aurora Public Library
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

Education:

  • Master's Degree or current enrollee in Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited program


Experience:

  • At least six (6) months professional library experience or 2 years of library experience
  • Library technology experience and experience working with automated systems in a library setting preferred

Knowledge:

  • The principles, organization, and practices of library service
  • Library classification system
  • Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions
  • Basic trouble-shooting in computer operation
  • Must have knowledge of ILS in general and preference for experience with Sierra

Must know or be willing to learn about copy machines, phones and other technology and software used at the library.

Abilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner
  • Communicate effectively in writing
  • Use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds
  • Frequent pushing lifting, and carrying
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Clear vision to reading and interpreting reports and data analysis preparation
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable office environment
  • Occasionally works nights and weekends

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer, calculator, multi-line telephones, copy/fax machine
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
