Title:                Archivist         

Location:        Claire T. Carney Library, UMass Dartmouth

Placement Type: Temporary (No Benefits)

Start date:       April 13, 2022 or ASAP

End date:        April 12, 2023

Schedule:        Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm

Pay Rate:        $20.75 - $24.00 per hour depending on experience

Description:

Project Archivist for the Howard T. Glasser Archives of Folk Music and Letter Arts

As a member of the Claire T. Carney Library's Archives and Special Collections team, the Project Archivist is responsible for processing the papers of former design professor Howard T. Glasser. Professor Glasser was deeply involved in the revival of folk music in the 1960s and 70s, and organized concerts and informal musical gatherings, all of which he recorded. He was the founder of the SMU/UMD Eisteddfod, an annual folk festival held on the campus from 1971-1996. The collection includes audio recordings and papers documenting his interest in folk music, as well as his papers and artwork documenting his career in teaching and practicing art, especially the calligraphic arts.

This is a one-year, full-time temporary appointment. Reporting to and under the direction of the Head of the Archives and Special Collections Division, the Project Archivist will process the papers, artwork, and audio collections of the Howard T. Glasser Archives of Folk Music and Letter Arts. This work entails arrangement and description of the collection, creation of a finding aid using ArchivesSpace, and creation of digital objects for inclusion in the library's Alma Digital platform.

Duties and Responsibilities:

o   Create a comprehensive processing plan

o   Execute the approved processing plan, meeting goals and deadlines

o   Refolder, rehouse and deaccession materials as needed

o   Identify and recommend items for possible access restrictions

o   Organize archival materials according to professional and local standards

o   Perform routine preservation measures

o   Identify records suitable for digitization or that require reformatting

o   Enter collection metadata in ArchivesSpace

o   Select items for inclusion in the library's Alma Digital platform

o   Create Marc records for items in Alma Digital following established templates

o   Provide general archives reference service and coverage in the absence of other department personnel

o   Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education, with a concentration in archives management, or significant coursework completed towards the degree.

Experience: Previous experience in archival arrangement and description. Can be experience from internship appointments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

o   Experience handling primary materials

o   Knowledge of preservation issues

o   Ability to work in a collegial setting

o   Demonstrated ability to complete projects or assignments in archival processing, arrangement, and description

o   Strong interpersonal communications skills

o   Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and standards in archival processing

o   Knowledge of descriptive standards such as DACS and use of appropriate thesauri

o   Demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards as they pertain to archival materials

Preferred Qualifications:

o   Application of best practices and standards in archival processing

o   Knowledge of or interest in musical genres

o   Demonstrated experience in metadata creation, especially using MARC

o   Experience managing a variety of audiovisual formats in archives

o   Familiarity with ArchivesSpace
