Job Description

Do you love guiding people to their next great read? Do you get excited about connecting people to information and resources? The Cedar Rapids Public Library is hiring a Materials Librarian! If you are highly organized, love helping others and providing exceptional customer service, and have your Master’s Degree in Library Sciences, join our organization today! 

In this role, you will catalog and/or select library materials as well as provide technical and information services to a City-wide program of library services.  You will work closely with the Materials Manager to develop budgets and acquisition plans. You will have an important role of making decisions on weeding, shifting, replacing and repairing the library collection. 


Position Schedule: Primarily daytime hours with rotating evenings and weekends

 

Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Catalogs and classifies newly acquired library materials;
  • Participates in construction and maintenance of other files;
  • Develops and maintains on-line authority file;
  • Selects and maintains materials for the library collection according to established policies;
  • Assists Collection Development Manager in developing budgets and acquisition plans;
  • Uses library ILS to track acquisitions and maintain catalog;
  • Assists Collection Development Manager with equipment acquisitions;
  • Researches and makes recommendations for new products and services;
  • Uses various computerized purchasing systems to order material for the library collection;
  • Monitors the acquisition of materials to ensure that purchases stay within the established budget;
  • Makes decisions on weeding, shifting, replacements, and repair of library collections;
  • Coordinates collection department workflow;
  • Works reference desk as required;
  • Provides verbal and written information to library patrons, assisting them in locating materials or in finding sources of information; listens to patron concerns; explains policies and patron accounts;
  • Instructs patrons in use of library resources and facilities;
  • Takes reservations on books and other materials currently in circulation;
  • When needed, releases books and other library materials to patrons in accordance with established procedures;
  • Completes procedures with returned materials;
  • Compiles and annotates bibliographies;
  • Fills out requisition order for supplies;
  • Supervises operating staff of work unit, as designated;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
  • Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;
  • Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;
  • Performs related work as required.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • Graduation from an American Library Association program with a Master’s Degree in Library Sciences; and;
  • Six months to two year of similar or related experience –or-
  • Six months to two years of customer service experience.
  • Proficiency with a second Non-English language, preferred.
