Job Description

NATURE OF WORK:

The Engagement Services team is seeking dedicated, creative individuals who are eager to join our new library branch at the Robert Crown Center

This position is responsible for assisting all who enter the facility by answering questions, providing directions, checking in and out library materials, processing library card registrations, and assisting patrons in the use of public computers, print, and electronic resources along with using library tools to reserve rooms and identify and register patrons for programs.

This candidate should reflect the diversity of our community through lived experience and is exploring what equitable access to resources means to Evanston.

These individuals will play a significant role in providing a welcoming, safe, and well-maintained facility for all.

Schedule: 20 hours per week

Wednesday 12-5

Thursday 4-8

Friday 1-6

Saturday 9-3

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

Welcomes all who enter the branch giving clear, accurate and timely answers to patron inquiries and directing patrons to Librarians and Branch Assistants as needed. Answers incoming phone calls with this same high level of customer service.

Assists patrons at the service desk by using the computer system to check in/out and renew library materials, issue library cards, and resolve problems. Accepts fines and fees using a cash register and credit card machine.

Performs daily branch opening and closing procedures. Empties book drop, routes materials to and from other locations, maintains reserve shelves, and processes items on reserve and missing item lists.

Oversees public computer signup, use, and printing along with the use of copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Assists with minor computer instructions and problem solving.

Assists patrons reserve study and meeting rooms and identifying and registering for programs using the library’s event system, Communico.

Checks shelved material to insure that items are shelved correctly. Efficiently and accurately sorts and shelves books, DVDs, magazines, and other materials, as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Provides excellent customer service and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers, volunteers, and staff throughout the Library, as well as outside the organization.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

Must possess a high school diploma or GED and one (1) or more years of customer service related work experience. 

The ability to speak a foreign language, particularly Spanish, is highly desirable.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

*Strong customer service skills.

*Proficiency with Internet search engines, word processing software, email, online computer catalogs, and Windows operating systems. Familiarity with Polaris (our library information system) is a plus

*Ability to promptly sort and file materials in alpha-numerical order.

*Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library as well as Recreation Dept. staff with whom we share the facility.

*Ability to prioritize many variable duties, requests, and responsibilities.

*Ability to exercise independent judgment.

*Ability to read, understand and interpret written instructions and perform mathematical calculations with the use of a calculator and/or cash register. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

The ability to work while standing as well as bodily movement associated with bending, kneeling, stretching, reaching, pushing, and pulling associated with shelving books and pushing a book cart. The ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 40 pounds.  The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

The ability to stand for at least four hours at a time.

The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes.

There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.

SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under the direction of the Supervising Librarian. The individual has contact with other Library institutions and staff at all levels and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives.  Work is assigned through specific projects and customer requests.  The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation.  Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences, and meetings.  Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned.  Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability, and performance in accordance with this classification standard.
