Job Description

Title:  Full-time Adult Services Librarian

Summary: The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for the planning and operation of all services for adults, updating and maintaining all technology including negotiating contracts, and applying for and processing grants for adult services.  Duties also include maintaining the library’s web page and social media, assisting with collection development and programming for adults, and assist with promoting our local museum.

Responsibilities:

1.  Planning and Management

A.    Plans, develops and recommends goals and objectives designed to fulfill the goals and objectives of the library, meet expectations of those served and maintain efficient and effective services

B.    Encourages the expansion of reference services and programs consistent with community needs and library resources.

C.    Consistently manages the reference services in accordance with approved library policies and procedures

D.    Recommends the level of technology necessary to ensure that collection and service goals are met, including departmental technology development.

E.    Works with Director and Cataloging/Archivist Librarian to maintain and promote museum collection.

2.  Financial Management

A.    Provides economic and conservative management of the Reference budget

B.    Provides zero based budgeting estimates for the annual budget of the library.

C.    Maintains all necessary financial records.

3.  Collection Development:

A.    Provides ongoing reference collection assessment including online databases and e-resources.

B.    Plans and develops multi-formatted collections to meet the informational needs of patrons in the community

C.    Selects, balances, and weeds collections, with primary responsibility for reference collections.

D.    Maintains awareness of current formats and trends.

4.  Service Development:

A.    Plans, publicizes, schedules and provides programs for adults.

B.    Provides full reference and reader’s advisory service to patrons.

C.    Provides instruction to groups and individuals, both formally and informally, regarding the use of library materials, services and technology.

D.    Provides circulation services to patrons when needed.

5.     Reporting Responsibilities

A.    Accounts to the Director on all public service activities and services.

B.    Compiles monthly and annual narrative and statistical reports for the Reference Room

C.    Prepares and submits other reports as requested by the Director.

Organizational relationships

A.    Works directly under the Library Director and helps manage all non-professional Library staff in performing duties essential to the achievement of efficient Library operations

B.    Reports to the Library Director

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A.  Extensive knowledge of theories, tools, and current trends in library service to adults.

B.  Extensive knowledge of personal computers and applications including electronic reference resources, software and databases.

C. Knowledge of reference materials and services.

D. Works collaboratively to plan, execute, and evaluate programs for adults.

E.  Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as effective oral and written presentation skills. 

F.  Ability to collaborate effectively with all staff to achieve departmental and Library goals

G. Self-motivated and able to exercise sufficient initiative and independent judgment to perform the job satisfactorily.

H. Ability to perform satisfactorily under the stressors of the position.

I.    Ability to perform the job in a reasonable time and in a manner that achieves reasonable Library performance and quality standards.

J.   Ability to perform the job without disrupting the work of others.

K.  Must be able to lift 25 pounds and walk up in down stairs.

Qualifications

A.    Masters Degree from an ALA accredited program in library science required.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

This is a full-time position that requires at least one night shift per week and a Saturday shift every four weeks.  It has full benefits with sick, personal, vacation leave, dental and health care, as well as a generous retirement option.
