The Community

The Sublette County Libraries serve a population of 10,000 spread out over 5,000 square miles of untouched wilderness of unparalleled beauty. Sublette County is cradled by three major mountain ranges, the Wind River Mountains, the Wyoming Range and the Gros Ventre Range. Pinedale, the county seat of Sublette County, sits at an altitude of 7,200 feet and is 80 miles southeast of Jackson Hole. It is a major outdoor recreation area with access to the Bridger Wilderness, White Pine Ski Area, the Green River and 1,300 lakes with boating, fishing, snow machining, hiking, mountain climbing and other outdoor pursuits. Due to its remote location, access to shopping centers, medical specialists, and transportation hubs require several hours’ drive though all basic necessities are available locally. The cost of living is relatively high; on average it costs about 19% more to live in Sublette County when compared to the rest of Wyoming, and on average it costs about 1.5% more to live in Wyoming when compared to the rest of the U.S.1 A large portion of Sublette County residents make their living from ranching, the oil and gas drilling industry, and from tourism. Pinedale has a vibrant arts community and most businesses are locally run small businesses, allowing for small town connection and rich quality of life. Remote, beautiful, and rugged, it is often said that Pinedale has two seasons: “winter and the Fourth of July.” A sign at the edge of town declares “Welcome to Pinedale… all the civilization you need!”
