Job Description

The Teaching and Learning Librarian is a member of Randall Library’s Academic & Research Engagement (ARE) division, which collaborates with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to provide information literacy instruction, assist with research, develop the library collection, provide consultative services supporting research and scholarly communication, and partner on programming, in alignment with the information and research needs of campus constituents. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with campus constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, materials, and expertise.

This is an 11-month (August – June) permanent non-tenure track special faculty position reporting to the Associate Director of Academic & Research Engagement. The salary range for this position begins at $54,000. Final salary for the selected candidate will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and preparation for success in the position. Applicants are encouraged to think broadly about and communicate how their skills and experiences transfer to the qualifications in ways that may not be obvious. We strongly encourage those who will further advance the Library’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community, including those from historically underrepresented groups, to apply for this position.

Upon initial appointment, this position will:

  • Develop and disseminate universally designed, non-discipline-specific library learning objects and content to support the overall instructional mission of the library, including maintaining ongoing initiatives and developing future programs and projects based on perceived need;
  • Support best practices in utilizing instructional technology tools in a library context and design research- and information literacy-related online learning objects and other instructional content based on campus needs;
  • Support the approximately 20 Randall Library faculty and staff who are involved in instruction to plan, develop, and deliver accessible and inclusive asynchronous and synchronous library instruction, multimedia tutorials, and other digital learning objects and aid them in designing programmatic, scaffolded curricula for information literacy instruction;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the library to incorporate concepts such as inclusive pedagogy, critical information literacy, universal design, and accessibility into library instruction;
  • Collaborate with the Office of Distance Education and eLearning and the Center for Teaching Excellence to support digital information literacy initiatives in the broader campus community.

Library faculty in the ARE division generally have the following responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructors to create, teach, and assess information literacy instruction for courses where information literacy skills are in development
  • Provide research and scholarly consultative services to faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students in areas of focus
  • Ensure that the library’s collections adequately support curricular and research needs of students, faculty, and staff in areas of focus
  • Engage with students, faculty, and staff, including collaborative programming such as workshops, panel discussions, fellows’ programs, and exhibits

As a library faculty member, this position will:

  • Provide in-person and on-call research help during scheduled Research Help Desk shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and chat
  • Support the mission and strategic plan of Randall Library and engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making
  • Participate in university and professional activities, such as research, conference presentations, publications, service, or other evidence of scholarly activity. Randall Library is committed to supporting professional development through time, funding, and mentorship
  • Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to Academic & Research Engagement
  • Understand and promote Randall Library’s commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion, as represented in the library’s DEAI strategic plan
