Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, and the off-site Hampden Center storage facility, is a highly collaborative, team-based organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Opened on March 25, 2013, the Anderson Academic Commons is the campus centerpiece for collaborative, technology-infused teaching, learning and engagement. Position Summary

The University of Denver Libraries is seeking an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative professional for a temporary 12-month position as Reference and Instruction Librarian at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. This position reports to the Interim Associate Dean for Student and Scholar Services. This position’s responsibilities will include approximately 90% librarianship and 10% service on Libraries and/or University committees.

Essential Functions

Participating fully as part of Reference & Instruction department, the Reference and Instruction Librarian provides hour-long general and specialized consultations for students, faculty, and staff in the Research Center, teaches information literacy workshops for disciplinary courses, and participates in instructional programming for first-year foundational courses. The librarian will also take on other roles within the department and the libraries as determined by background and interest. The librarian works closely with faculty to develop course-integrated instruction based on curricular needs. The person in this position will also assist with the training and mentoring of graduate student staff working in the Research Center. The person in this position will intentionally integrate diversity and inclusiveness into all aspects of their work and aid patrons with accessibility needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of best practices and current trends in information literacy pedagogy and reference services.
  • Ability to build strong connections with faculty and students to provide effective research and instructional programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of using library research databases.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, effectively, and confidentially, using tact and excellent judgment.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
  • Experience working in public services (reference, access etc.) in a library.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with new technologies and ability to apply knowledge to the design and delivery of research and instruction services.
  • Experience working in reference or research services.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience teaching in a higher education or K-12 environment.
  • Ability to work in a leadership role in a team environment.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the assessment of library services as well as with evaluation and assessment tools.
  • Ability to analyze data and gather survey responses using Excel and Qualtrics or other similar tools.

Working Environment

The work environment is an academic library, which is culturally diverse. The library is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety, using workstations equipped with easy access to needed resources and access to the Internet. The unit is one of several working collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.

  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Salary Grade:

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $63,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
