Nature of Work:
The Archives and Digitization Specialist works cooperatively with employees and the Metadata Librarian in the Strauss Health Sciences Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to provide primary and independent support in developing and maintaining the library’s digital repository and archival collection. This role will be responsible for providing complex project support for library-wide and Special Collections digitization projects as assigned. The position exists within the Collection Management department and plays a major role in furthering the success of the Library’s digital initiatives by enhancing resource discovery and improving access to collections. The incumbent shall stay abreast of new technologies and integrate them into department practices.

Supervision Received: Directly supervised by the Head, Collection Management.

Supervision Exercised: The Library Academic Services Senior Professional may explain work processes and train others. The individual contributor may serve as a resource or guide by advising others on how to use processes within a system or as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team.

Duties:

Provide primary support in developing and maintaining a digital repository:

  • In support of the Metadata Librarian, this role will be responsible for evaluating individual, repository or archive item (including historic or delicate items) and will determine if they align with collection criteria.
  • Examine materials and determine how to scan, upload and apply metadata to items loaded into the digital repository; Role will need to use critical thinking and applied knowledge to determine if items satisfy the collection criteria, and how those items should be processed and cataloged to facilitate the best access by users.
  • Evaluate physical items and decide on appropriate archival treatment to ensure safe storage and preservation.
  • Interpret content and create descriptions that follow Library standards and allow for discoverability in the digital repository;
  • Apply cataloging standards and standard vocabulary to create metadata records.
  • Develop and input initial descriptive metadata for cataloging in Online Computer Library Center (OCLC).
  • Upload electronic thesis and dissertations into the digital repository and verify user-assigned metadata.
  • Assist with marketing and promotion efforts for the digital repository.

Process archival materials to facilitate cataloging, preservation, and digitization efforts:

  • Evaluate materials and determine if they align with collection criteria.
  • Process materials for library collections; sort archival donations into archival folders and boxes; label folders and make labels for boxes and barcode boxes; weed duplicates; and help with ordering archival supplies.

Additional Duties:

  • Support rare book cataloging and/or inventory projects; must know how to handle, store and properly preserve materials. Rare and/or historic materials may require complex research in order to create an accurate metadata record.
  • Provide support for other collection work as needed. This may include: receiving new physical materials; copying catalog library materials; updating catalog records for collection maintenance;  and maintaining the library’s print serials collection.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, guidelines, and best practices and maintain collections.
  • Act as a project lead and train student workers on bibliographic projects as needed.
  • Participate in committees and work groups of the library and regional or national organizations as appropriate.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring rate for this position has been established at $48,701

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, business, public administration, health care, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, accounting, finance, library science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis, but not for the specific experience.
  • Two years of experience in a library, museum, or directly related archival position in a professional setting.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Library or higher education experience.
  • Experience working with various library software:
    • Integrated Library Management Systems (ILMS), such as ExLibris/Alma
    • Digital repository platforms such as Samvera Hyku
  • Experience processing archival materials.
  • Experience in digital library projects, such as scanning, creating metadata, and ingesting items into a digital repository.
  • Experience cataloging or processing rare books.
  • Experience cataloging library materials following national standards such as RDA, MeSH, NLM classification, or Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification.
  • Experience working with catalog records, such as updating bibliographic or item records.
  • Experience in book preservation and book repairs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate to advanced skills using Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds (i.e. working with internal and external contacts, such as students, staff, faculty, vendors, or publishers).
  • Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and project and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate, recommend, and implement operational workflows and procedures that align with new trends in librarianship and local considerations.
