Job Summary
Under supervision of the Director, the Reference Librarian has responsibility for the management of reference and adult library services, volunteer coordination, website and social media management, and other responsibilities as detailed below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide reference and instructional services in individual and group settings
• Collection development of the reference and circulating collection
• Maintain current awareness & use of emerging technologies with ability to teach patrons and staff to use new technologies
• Assist patrons and staff with technology-related questions and requests
• Promote library collections, technology and services through presentations, programs and displays
• Plan, publicize and implement adult programs
• Update website and social media to reflect events and information
• Write and submit press releases to local news outlets
• Recruit, interview, train and supervise teen and adult volunteers
• Provide genealogy research assistance & navigate library archive collection
• Promote library services through outreach activities
• Provide readers advisory and assist at the circulation desk as needed
Qualifications & Requirements
• MLIS from an ALA-accredited college or university, or MLIS student close to graduation
• Working knowledge of reference tools, both print and electronic
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to speak before groups
• Strong knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
• Proficient with computers, tablets, e-readers and other handheld devices
• Excellent public service attitude - empathy for people and their needs, pleasant, friendly, helpful, patient, tactful
• Dependable, punctual, strong work ethic and understanding of confidentiality
• Ability to follow instructions and work with a minimum of supervision
• Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and patrons
