Summary: Plans, facilitates, coordinates and provides digital learning opportunities for all ages across the District. Works to increase staff and public awareness, knowledge, comfort, and competence in the use of the District’s digital resources, including but not limited to downloadable media, online databases, digital tools, and various software and social media platforms. Identifies new digital opportunities to serve the public and facilitate staff effectiveness. Performs a wide variety of professional level services in support of the District’s digital initiatives.

General Essential Duties:

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to any combination of the following tasks:

  • Creates a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff that fosters equity, diversity and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect and value individual differences.
  • Provides responsive, courteous service to all patrons, regardless of age, race, class, gender, appearance or ability.
  • Assists patrons in the use and navigation of library materials, resources, and technologies.

·         Provides direct supervision of assigned staff and establishes goals and priorities for assigned staff, including performance appraisals and evaluation; scheduling and coaching on industry best practices. 

·         Makes recommendations on personnel matters affecting subordinates, including interviewing applicants, hiring new employees, evaluating performance, and taking corrective action. 

·         Provides input for anticipated local and system needs.  Communicates goals and strategic priorities to direct reports. 

·         Plans, coordinates, delivers and evaluates informative and relevant public programs. 

·         Serves as a working member of committees as assigned, including the programming committee.  

·         Assists in the compilation and reporting of statistics.

  • Provides in-depth reference services to locate reliable information and specific materials for patrons.
  • Delivers programs to audiences within the library and at organizations within the branch’s service area.  Collaborates with schools, agencies or community groups to promote library services, resources and programs.
  • Assists the library manager with managerial duties including assisting and training staff, resolving customer disputes. Serves as “Person In-Charge” in absence of Library Manager. Resolves immediate branch issues such as staffing, scheduling and safety issues.
  • Recommends additions to and removal of items from the collection in order to keep collection appealing, current, and relevant to the community.
  • Takes a leadership role in coordinating various teams and districtwide initiatives.
  • Provides effective readers’ advisory for all readers using adept communication skills, readers’ advisory tools, and personal knowledge of books and authors.
  • Communicates library policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Performs duties in a manner consistent with the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Assists patrons with circulation functions which include, but are not limited to, issuing and updating library cards, placing holds, and addressing account problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities related to Digital Services include the following

  • Coordinates digital programs and services for all ages for the District.

·         Plans, and implements a variety of digital and technology-related library programs and workshops, including STEM and job seeking initiatives.

  • Provides direct supervision of the computer lab in the Old Town Library, including scheduling, and coaching for assigned staff.

·         Provides input for digital services budget, and ensures compliance with budget limits and established purchasing procedures with subordinate staff. 

·         Participates in the development and implementation of library policies, procedures and long-range plans related to digital and computer lab services.

  • Collaborates with IT and staff throughout the District to develop and facilitate the implementation of a technology and digital services plan for staff and public which incorporates goals and objectives from the Library’s strategic plan.
  • Maintains an awareness of new and emerging technological and library trends, developments, and products. Proposes digital solutions to improve, complement, and enhance traditional library services and collections, including but not limited to makerspaces and mobile computer labs.
  • Maintains an awareness of the digital divide and how to leverage partnerships, including trends with seniors, teens, tweens and job seekers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of library policies, best practices, trends, theories, values and issues.

  • Knowledge of current and emerging models, practices, and tools used by public libraries for the access and discoverability of resources.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies, Internet navigation, social media outlets and Integrated Library Systems (ILS) software.
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and community.
  • Able to understand and use library resources, both digital and physical, with proven ability to research, retrieve, evaluate, and utilize information.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in library science or relevant Master’s degree preferred; two years of related work experience in a technologically progressive library is preferred; evidence of supervisory or leadership skills; direct experience involving library reference services, information services and/or circulation services, with emphasis on digital programming; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret.  Ability to write reports and business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluency in Spanish desirable.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates and Licenses:

Current valid driver’s license required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
