Job Summary

The University Libraries encourage applications for a Continuing Resources and General Description Specialist! This position supports the discovery of Libraries collections through description of materials in multiple formats and by contributing to Team and Chapter projects. Primary responsibilities include cataloging serial publications in all languages and formats, including international, foreign, federal, and state documents, monographic series, and classed-together analyzed series; solving serials cataloging problems and performing routine maintenance and improvement of serials catalog records and monographic analytic records in both OCLC and the local catalog; and creating and editing item and check-in/holdings records for serials and item records for monographic sets and series. This position also performs original and sophisticated copy cataloging in various formats and subject fields in accordance with team needs.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Continuing Resources Cataloging and Maintenance

  • Serves as the primary expert for continuing resources cataloging within the Resource Description Services (RDS) Team. Performs original and copy cataloging of serials and classed-together analyzed series in all formats and languages to provide public access to materials in the Libraries’ catalog. Applies international and local cataloging standards in cataloging continuing resources, including the standards for the interpretation of authority records. Updates bibliographic records according to national standards to reflect the most recent information for serial publications such as ceases, major changes, notes about minor changes, and additional access points (such as corporate authors) in both OCLC and local database. Chips in to the team’s CONSER work by creating and enhancing serials records to CONSER standards. Creates CONSER records for the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) project. Updates check-in and holdings and item records as needed in the local catalog to reflect current holdings. Identifies ongoing database maintenance needs and manages projects such as retrospective cataloging, standardizing/verifying holding statements, cataloging and inventory of materials going to storage, or withdrawing materials.

Other Cataloging Duties

  • Performs original and copy cataloging for other library materials in various formats and subject fields in accordance with team needs. Applies local and international cataloging standards in cataloging resources in print and other formats, including the standards for the interpretation of authority records. Engages in RDS linked data initiatives.

Batch Loading

  • Performs batch loading operations for GPO shipping list and full bibliographic records from Marcive. Loads State of Colorado digital records from the Colorado State Library and updates URLs as needed. Loads bibliographic records from World Bank.

Problem Solving and Communication

  • Advises team and section leads of major concerns and problems and devises appropriate solutions. Communicates with personnel in other chapters, teams, and sections regarding procedures, answers questions in a timely manner, and explains current activities. Serves as the initial contact for other teams and sections for questions regarding serials cataloging or holdings. Collaborates closely with the Collections Management Team on serials maintenance issues. Coordinates with other Libraries teams and sections to manage large transfer and withdrawal projects. May assist with cross-chapter catalog management processes. Represents RDS in appropriate venues.

Procedures/Instruction

  • Formulates procedural changes and assists with training in coordination with other RIS teams and sections, as well as additional chapters in the Libraries as needed. Develops expertise in FOLIO and creates and maintains FOLIO procedures and documentation, particularly in the area of continuing resources and other aggregated works. Assists with training as appropriate.

Professional Development/Service

  • May serve on library-wide and national level service committees, groups, and pods. Pursues an active program of continuing education to remain current in national cataloging standards and technology, with an emphasis on serials/continuing resources cataloging. Attends university professional development and supervisory workshops. Attends serials cataloging workshops. Keeps up-to-date with revisions in cataloging rules and trends in serials cataloging standard processes. Participates in learning activities that promote inclusive excellence.

What You Should Know

  • This position is in a hybrid work situation, working up to 2 days remotely per week.

  • Salary range: $50,000 - $55,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • One year of library experience performing serials cataloging experience using MARC formats, RDA, LC Classification, and LC Subject Headings.
  • Experience cataloging in an Integrated Library System (ILS) cataloging and serials module.
  • Experience cataloging in OCLC.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • ALA-accredited M.L.S. or equivalent.
  • Experience creating CONSER records and authority records.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cataloging standards.
  • Experience cataloging multiple formats of materials.
  • Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Sierra and/or FOLIO.
  • Experience training cataloging staff and developing workflows, procedures, and documentation.
  • Knowledge of at least one non-English language adequate to determine the subject and some detail when cataloging titles written in a foreign language.
