Job Description

The Assistant Director is responsible for the development of an evolving and clear vision and direction for the specific functions and services of the Administrative and Operational Services Division. This position has oversight of the library’s IT (includes desktop support and web services) HR, Fiscal, Communication, and Facilities (includes library security) functions. These areas involve two important aspects-supporting library stakeholder workflows, processes, and effectiveness and working externally in a highly complex tri-institutional environment that requires the ability to bring together campus partners around shared goals and initiatives.

This is a varied portfolio, and we understand candidates may not have direct experience in all areas, so we are emphasizing elements of collaboration and communication both internally and externally in blending these functions to provide a holistic support framework through a strong vision and implementation. In addition, the functions mentioned have a dotted reporting line to the Director due to tri-institutional communication and collaboration needs. While a dotted-line manager can provide feedback and assign work-related tasks, they function as an internal stakeholder who guides the work but has a limited scope.

The Assistant Director also provides inclusive leadership through shared decision-making for library-wide planning, personnel decisions, budget allocation, resource management, organizational effectiveness, program, and policy development as part of the library’s Administrative Team and in collaboration with the Department Heads group.

The Assistant Director demonstrates interest and skill in collaborating with individuals and groups within and beyond the library, across the campus, and in the broader regional and library professional communities; has strong organizational skills; the ability to work collaboratively and effectively both independently and as a team leader and member. The individual in this role possesses experience managing personnel and demonstrated collaborative team-building skills, including the ability to motivate, develop, and mentor others, and to welcome and support diverse ideas, cultures, and experiences. Finally, the Assistant Director is committed to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and responds effectively to changing campus needs and priorities. This position reports to the Director and University Librarian.
