Job Description

OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under the general supervision of the Sr. Manager, Programs & Events, the Creative Technologist co-manages the library’s makerspace. The Creative Technologist is a leader in the maker community, a partner with local creatives, a Master of Technology, a patient educator, and is not afraid of experimentation.The Creative Technologist is nimble and works well in an open and collaborative workshop environment. The Creative Technologist is responsible for maintaining a functional and safe makerspace that supports learners of all ages, levels, abilities, and social/cultural backgrounds.

The starting pay for this position is $63,600 - $75,088 annually, commensurate with experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Makerspace

Works cohesively in a team environment with the other Creative Technologists, Programs & Events staff, other library staff, volunteers, and outside instructors to create and promote makerspace programming.

Provide safety and equipment training, as well as one-on-one and group coaching and instruction to students and volunteers of all ages, levels and abilities.

Works independently with limited supervision. 

Provides regular maintenance and cleaning of the makerspace, tools, and equipment, and takes steps to repair or replace malfunctioning equipment promptly.

Develops maker programming and conducts one-on-one and/or group classes using the tools, materials, and processes in the makerspace. 

Establishes and maintains relationships with local area artists, makers, business owners, and entrepreneurs for programs and outreach events in coordination with the Creative Technologist and Programs & Events team.

Serves as a maker resource for library staff and community.

With the help of the volunteer coordinator, recruits and trains local volunteers for the makerspace.

Collaborates with other City departments and outside partners on long-term projects at the library and within the community.

Other

Help, in collaboration with the Creative Technologist team, create department application and systems standards, maintenance procedures, and operational procedures.  Documents new department procedures.

Works to promote makerspace activities via library and city communication channels. Ensures materials are shared on a timely basis.

Maintains fixed asset inventory information for equipment and software in the makerspace.  Works as a team with City IT counterparts and applies City recognized best practices while adhering to general IT policies and procedures.

Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City, Library Foundation, and Library Commission.

Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents.  Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.  Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.  Reports all accidents and damage to City property.  Trains through the City to increase the ability to respond to safety and emergency situations (CPR, AED, etc.)

Generally, duties and responsibilities are listed from most to least critical or time-consuming within each category.

Serves as a Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed.

Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participating in professional training and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

Performs administrative tasks such as answering emails, scheduling, preparing vendor contracts, reconciling purchases, reporting statistics, and meetings with staff, outside instructors, and community partners. 

Purchases tools and materials for classes and/or general use applying and adhering to City best practices, policies, and procedures. Trains users how to learn and teach themselves makerspace-specific software and hardware.

Hosts and/or travels regionally, nationally, and internationally to multi-day events such as camps and MakerFaires.

Advanced knowledge of all tools, materials, and processes available in the space.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The required minimum qualifications are a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a related field and a minimum of two years of technical training with additional instructional experience in a makerspace or similar educational setting.

Experience with two or more of the following technologies: laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing and scanning, digital design software,fiber arts, CNC fabrication, or other related makerspace technologies. 

Demonstrate ability to provide one-on-one or small group instruction.

Ability to plan and carry out complex multi-day programs such as camps and Maker Faires. 

An effective collaborator, team builder, and instructor who is skilled at leveraging the talents of others and solving problems.

Strong communication skills with the ability to express ideas clearly through various methods including written, oral, web, video, and social media.

Comfortable with a hands-on approach to projects, particularly an ability to improvise with audiences of varied ages and abilities.

Experience with digital and traditional fabrication. 

Experience supporting a variety of software suites including Microsoft Office and Adobe CC.

Valid Colorado driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record.  Willing use of a personal vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed).  

A flexible schedule.  Will be required to work evenings and weekends based on community needs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:

Experience operating woodworking equipment such as power tools, table saw, drill press, bandsaw, hand tools, and associated materials.

Interest/abilities with microcontroller prototyping platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Circuit, Python,  or Micro:bit.

Experience developing and running a mobile library and/or makerspace.

Experience producing written and video content for the web.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions:

Physical and Mental Effort:

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permit the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.  

Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials.  

Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and tools for fabrication. 

Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes permit the employee to work in a workshop setting.  Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/or operating a keyboard. 

Ability to stand and/or walk continuously.  

Work Environment:  Works primarily in a clean environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noise. The performance of this position normally requires exposure to typical workshop areas where under certain conditions the use of personal protective equipment will be required.  Temperatures of the work area may be affected by the outside temperatures and inside machinery.

Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following:  Computer workstations, servers, network hardware, scanners, printers, copy machines, phones, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, power tools, hand tools, sewing machines, and looms.
