Job Description

– The Rio Rancho Public Library is a second Library IT Tech! Our library techs assist in supporting library systems including the automated book return, print and PC sign-up and more, as well as assisting patrons with tech-related questions. 

Position Summary

The Library Technician is responsible for providing assistance in the maintenance and support of public and staff computer equipment of various types and assisting staff in use of software and computer-related equipment. 

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree 

           For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Information Technology, Computer Science, or a directly related discipline 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience (in addition to substitution of experience for college degrees): One year. In lieu of a degree, incumbent must possess five years of relevant experience that includes personal computers and network support. 

Education and/or experience preferences: A+ Certified Technician; Microsoft Certified Software Engineer

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Knowledge and skills in the support and maintenance of desktop computer equipment, printers and software including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Windows 7, email, and Internet applications. 

Skills:  Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Expert skills in PC hardware, software and component-level troubleshooting. 

Abilities: Exercise initiative, independent judgment and independent problem solving. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. 

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with division staff, supervisors or managers on computer technology problems and modifications and special projects. Works with City IT staff to troubleshoot and solve complex technical and network problems. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. Communicates with staff at a non-technical level. External: Interacts with vendors to receive computing equipment and resolves problems as required. Presents a friendly and courteous image for the City with vendors, contractors, public officials, and the general public. 

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Moderate--incumbent is expected to analyze situations that are not covered by established procedures or instructions and suggest to supervisor a recommended course of action 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: Low -- Position is accountable to a Department Director or Division Manager and cannot make major decisions or obligate the City 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations) 

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs minor repairs or upgrade to computer software and equipment. Installs software and computer equipment in conjunction with City Information Technology staff. 
  • Troubleshoots problems and researches methods for solutions.
  • Assists in selection of computer hardware, software and supplies as requested
  • Organizes and maintains an inventory of equipment, software, computer-related supplies and spare parts.
  • Cleans, inspects, and evaluates problem equipment or printers.
  • Assists staff in use of personal computer equipment and software.
  • Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor.
  • Reports problems or needs to supervisor and prepares written reports as necessary.
  • Reads manuals and self-trains in order to acquire in-depth knowledge of library- supported software and equipment.
  • Attends workshops and training as required.
  • Reports complex problems and issues to City Information Technology staff and works with them to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Assists in various computer related projects.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • May be scheduled/required to work nights and weekends
