Summary: Under general supervision of the Library Manager, the Teen Services Librarian provides library services and programming for tweens and teens with diverse backgrounds and abilities (typically ages 9-17). Serves as lead scheduler for information service desks.  Exhibits excellent customer service while performing all work duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Helps create a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff that fosters equity, diversity and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect and value individual differences.
  • Provides responsive, courteous service to all customers, regardless of age, race, class, gender, appearance or ability.
  • Conducts regular community needs assessments in order to create tailored services and programs to address identified tween and teen needs.
  • Serves as a member of the teen services team to take a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating the overall teen services program.
  • Ensures the library's teen collections include relevant print, audio, and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of teens in the community.
  • Creates and maintains service desk shift schedule to ensure staffing levels are suitable at all times.  Works with scheduling team and data to adapt schedule to changing branch needs.
  • Collaborates with Youth Services Librarian to coordinate desk schedule, programming and story time schedule.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of library policies, procedures and long-range plans related to teen and tween services.
  • Serves as a working member of committees as assigned, including the programming committee.
  • Assists in the compilation and reporting of statistics.
  • Provides and models exceptional customer service by demonstrating an approachable, friendly demeanor. Provides service in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Assists customers in the use and navigation of library materials, resources, and technologies.
  • Provides in-depth reference services to locate reliable information and specific materials for customers.
  • Delivers programs to audiences within the library and at organizations within the branch’s service area.  Collaborates with schools, agencies or community groups to promote library services, resources and programs.
  • Assists the library manager with managerial duties including assisting and training staff, resolving customer disputes and acting as person in charge.
  • Recommends additions to and removal of items from the teen collection in order to keep collection appealing, current and relevant to the community.
  • Takes a leadership role in coordinating various teams and districtwide initiatives. Plans and directs staff development programs.
  • Provides effective readers’ advisory for all readers using adept communication skills, readers’ advisory tools, and personal knowledge of books and authors.
  • Communicates library policies and procedures to customers.
  • Assists customers with circulation functions which include, but are not limited to, issuing and updating library cards, placing holds, and addressing account problems.
  • Designs, evaluates and maintains teen library web resources.
  • Instructs teens and caregivers on information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
  • Leverages community experts, coaches and mentors for services and programs in order to meet teen needs and interests.
  • Coordinates daily activities of staff and volunteers assigned to teen services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of teens.
  • Ability to translate teen needs and interests into effective library services and programs.
  • Knowledge of current trends in library services for and with teens.
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.
  • Knowledge of connected learning and ability to design programs that embed connected learning principles.
  • Knowledge of best practices in teen services, including guidelines and standards published by ALA, YALSA and other recognized organizations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including through email.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to serve the public courteously.
  • Able to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Able to learn and stay current with emerging technology, including digital media.
  • Must be able to speak distinctly to large groups.

·         Ability to work with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds in a variety of settings and formats. 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in library science or relevant Master’s degree preferred; two years of related work experience in a technologically progressive library is preferred; direct experience involving library services, information services and/or circulation services, with emphasis on teen programming; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in working for and with tweens and teens (ages 9 to 17).

Language Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluency in English is required.  Fluency in Spanish or other language in addition to English is desirable.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment: 

Work is performed indoors in a standard library environment with moderate levels of noise.  A Librarian is required to work a variety of scheduled hours including days, nights, and weekends as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle and feel; talk and hear.  The demands on the visual sense are high and requires employee to use close-up and color vision. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; and crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 30-40 pounds.
