Job Summary

The Hawkeye Community College Library is looking for a Library Technician with a keen sense of curiosity and persistence to join their team.  As the Library Technician, you would be responsible for implementing first level technical support for online resources and library technology.  This is achieved by assisting librarians with the configuration, authentication and administration of library systems as well as ordering and maintaining library collections.

Essential Job Functions 

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs all tasks associated with acquisition, de-acquisition, processing, and management of library
    materials for circulation and/or access, including copy cataloging, completing inventory, etc.
  • Provides customer and reference services at the library’s circulation desk.
  • Responsible for maintaining the serials collection to include ordering, claiming and organizing, updates holdings in online platforms, and performs yearly withdrawals.
  • Implements and activates electronic resources to support granular e-resource discovery.
  • Maintains accurate records of all library expenditures, license agreements, and statistics.
  • Prepares electronic records of library holdings according to consortium and national standards.
  • Creates and manages metadata records for print and electronic materials.
  • Oversees and maintains the library social media accounts. Develops content for social media accounts, widgets, and promotional material. 
  • Provides first level technical support by troubleshooting access problems, software and library equipment.
  • Assists librarians with the configuration and administration of library systems.
  • Develops and updates training and procedural documentation.
  • Provides general backup and assistance to library staff as needed. 
  • Provides on-call coverage for assigned weekend if scheduled staff member is absent.
  • Participates in campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate of Arts Degree and two (2) years of experience in library services or equivalent combination of education and experience to total four (4) years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library science, systems, and services.
  • Knowledge of online databases and their specific authentication requirements, support procedures, and functionality.
  • Knowledge of financial procedures and budget balancing.
  • Experience with library management software. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with technical support/troubleshooting technology.
  • Experience in copy cataloging or other library technical services roles.
  • Coursework in library science or computer science.
  • Working knowledge of library science, systems, and services.

Working Conditions

Anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30 pm including occasional evening and weekend coverage.   

Work is performed either in or a combination of an office setting or classroom setting and may be exposed to an indoor environment and dust.  Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.   Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty, general public and staff in person, by telephone and computers.
