Job Description

Provides library services, collection development and maintenance. Oversees technical services and processing. Maintains the library catalog and fixes discrepancies within the library catalog. Interviews, trains, supervises and evaluates branch staff and volunteers. Performs research, customer assistance, programming, ordering, statistics compilation, deposit reconciliation, and enforcement of library policies. Acts as Person in Charge in absence of Librarian III. 

Essential Functions

Manages library functions in the areas of cataloging, acquisitions and performs ongoing maintenance and development for the integrated library automated system. Provides quality control of outsourced materials and communicates with vendors as necessary to resolve problems and establish policy and procedure.

Serves as the library database manager and authority on automation issues. Recommends the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment, develops procedures for processing all library materials.

Supervises, hires, trains, evaluates and provides effective leadership to clerical staff. Monitors, appraises and reviews evaluations of employee performance. This position involves working with the Polaris system and the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) national database and an ability to work with computer applications in general, in order to solve problems, produce reports and work with vendors to resolve discrepancies.

Assists in preparing the annual budget, particularly as it relates to technical services and collection needs. Reviews potential materials for acquisition and takes the lead in acquisition and collection development efforts for the library system. Maintains the library’s collection records accurately.

Oversees technical services and back-room work performed by direct reports and other staff as assigned. Works with clerical staff to develop policies and procedures for processing materials. Ensures that all library materials are processed correctly and efficiently.

 Acts as a liaison to outside organizations and serves on standing and/or ad-hoc committees as assigned.  

Provides exceptional customer service at the front desk, addresses customer situations or complaints, provides direction to staff on customer issues, and represents the branch to the public. Answers reference questions, performs reader’s advisory and assists customers with digital devices, promoting all material types and products. 

Completes daily and weekly cash deposits as assigned. Submits work tickets for repairs and reviews building regularly for outages/repairs/cleanliness. Ensures that facilities are safe, welcoming, and healthy for staff and patrons.

Implements, monitors and reports statistical summaries of strategic initiatives.

Oversees maintenance, safety and security of the branch in absence of Librarian III. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging tools and standards including, but not limited to AACR2, RDA, MARC21, Library of Congress Subject Headings, DDC Classification, OCLC bibliographic formats and standards and LC name and subject authorities.

Experience with backfile processing, establishing authority control, and OCLC reclamation projects preferred.
