Job Description

The Katharine Brush Library at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut is searching for a dynamic, forward thinking, and community-focused Instruction and Outreach Librarian for 10-month academic year. One of three professional librarians, the Instruction and Outreach Librarian will assume the primary responsibility of teaching and coordinating the library instruction and information literacy program, including curriculum development and collaborating with academic departments. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will assist with research and information inquiries from the Loomis community with a focus on supporting students in developing research strategies to locate and evaluate information. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will develop partnerships with campus organizations, and lead the library’s outreach, marketing, and programming. This position includes one evening shift per week and limited weekend hours for special events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with teaching faculty and librarians to develop and promote student-centered library instruction classes and curriculum development
  • Coordinate and lead library instruction classes in collaboration with individual teaching faculty and academic departments
  • Provide high-quality general and subject specialized reference assistance and research consultations to the Loomis community
  • Develop, support, and revise the library’s online resources, including LibGuides and other tutorials
  • Create and develop connections with departments to expand library's presence on campus
  • Participate in collection management and development
  • Organize and develop outreach initiatives that build community and promote the library, such as co-host and plan events with the school’s centers (the Alvord Center for Global & Environmental Studies, Norton Family Center for the Common Good, Pearse Hub for Innovation, and Writing Center)
  • Develop projects and initiatives that cultivate a welcoming and collaborative library environment for the Loomis community
  • Contribute to special and other projects or tasks assigned as necessary as they pertain to the goals and objectives of the library, including summer reading, library orientation, and displays

Other Responsibilities

In addition to library responsibilities, faculty at The Loomis Chaffee School are responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Required
    • MLS, MLIS, or equivalent master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution
    • Two to three years experience as a professional librarian in a school, public, or academic library
    • One year experience teaching in a library instruction program
    • Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative environment and interact effectively with faculty, colleagues, and academically motivated high school students
    • An understanding of current and emerging information literacy practices, standards, pedagogies, and assessments
    • Library reference or research consultation experience
    • Proficiency working with digital library resources and databases
    • Working knowledge of emerging library technologies and tools for outreach
    • Experience using an Integrated Library System (ILS)
    • Positive attitude, strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work independently as well as in a team
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Preferred
    • Collection management and development experience
    • Experience with screen capture software or creating digital learning objects
    • Experience with usability techniques for library resources and spaces, including user-centered design tools and technologies
