Job Description

General Overview

The Gallatin Public Library is seeking a highly trained, energetic, and sociable Cataloging and Acquisitions Librarian.  This position will work under the supervision and guidance of the Gallatin Library Manager and will be primarily responsible for the various aspects of collection management. This will be a 40 hour per week position, at $16.96 per hour, with a flexible schedule.

Essential Job Duties

  • The Sumner County Library System strictly adheres to a community first culture.  We exist to serve the public and strive to do so in a positive, creative, and friendly way.  All employees are expected to contribute to a mentality of unity and service within the library staff.
  • Selects and acquires new materials in various media formats for the library system.
  • Catalogs all materials received by the library system for inclusion in the library system collection including all purchased and donated items.
  • Maintains records of all purchased and donated items and processes all items discarded and/or deleted from the library collection.
  • Creates original MARC records when necessary.
  • Classifies materials using Dewey Decimal Classification or other mandated systems.
  • Updates and maintains records for the library’s online catalog system.
  • Deletes discarded and weeded materials from library automation system and state catalog.
  • Cleans, repairs, and updates items in circulation as needed.
  • Changes holding code status as needed to place items into regular circulation or transition to other locations.
  • Gathers and compiles statistical information pertaining to cataloging activities and prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, and annual reports of all cataloging operations.
  • Remains current on contemporary literary offerings and trends.
  • Assists with making decisions pertaining to the retention and/or discarding of donated books and other materials.
  • Assists with daily operations of the library when necessary to include daily opening and closing procedures, assisting with the circulation or reference desks, etc.
  • Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

·         All aspects of collection management.

·         Contemporary cataloging practices utilized by public libraries including commonly utilized software applications.

·         Current periodicals available to public library systems including newspapers, reference materials, magazines, journals, etc.

·         Contemporary trends in literature and public library collections.

·         Public library operations including the proper storage of various types of books, periodicals, newspapers, audio tapes and CDs, etc.

·         Commonly utilized computer programs including Microsoft Office

Ability to:

·         Coordinate and maintain a current and comprehensive collection of books, reference resources, and periodicals available to public libraries.

·         Accurately compile statistical information and prepare comprehensive reports regarding cataloging operations.

·         Remain current on new developments in library operations and apply them effectively on the job.

·         Prioritize personal time and activities to ensure the timely completion of all job responsibilities, meet established deadlines, etc.

·         Interact effectively with library patrons, local and regional officials, co-workers, community organizations, and the public.

·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.

·         Maintain confidentiality and respect individual privacy and rights in dealing with customer and/or employee records and personal information.

·         Adhere to and enforce all library and county policies, procedures, and restrictions.

·         Present self as a positive, unbiased, and professional role model including having a pleasant attitude, refraining from using profanity, and always remaining professional with library guests.

·         Physically perform the essential functions of the job as described above.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are typically acquired through attainment of:

•          Master of Library Science, or

•          Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of cataloging experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work will be performed primarily indoors.  The job duties require extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and lifting objects up to 25 pounds.

EQUIPMENT USED

The employee will operate a variety of office equipment to include telephone, computer, printer, scanner, microfiche reader, etc.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
