Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Position Summary

Reporting to the Music Library Supervisor, this part-time (20 hours per week) employee works as a public service staff member at the Music Library, retrieving, circulating, preparing and processing materials, and assisting users with directional and informational questions. This position includes support of music library engagement and outreach efforts as needed. The position entails primarily evening and weekend hours. Work schedule is Monday - Thursday 6pm - 10pm and Sundays from 1pm - 5pm.

Essential Functions

  • 40%: Works at the service desk executing circulation transactions; retrieving and re-shelving reserve items, media, circulating devices, and current periodicals; assisting patrons with catalog and database searching, and with finding items on the shelves; assisting patrons with printing, photocopying, and scanning equipment; assisting patrons with general inquiries; assisting patrons wishing to pay fines; preparing and maintaining course reserves; fielding telephone inquiries; monitoring and coaching student employees as needed; monitoring the service desk and adjacent areas to assure a positive patron experience.
  • 20%: Supports Music Library collection development activities and/or engagement and outreach efforts by performing related tasks as assigned.
  • 20%: Works in the general stacks shelving materials; retrieving materials for Prospector, Interlibrary Loan, and paging requests; and performing shelf-reading and materials shifting as needed.
  • 20%: Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Must be able to communicate with diplomacy and tact, in writing, in person, and on the telephone. Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented with ability to maintain thorough and accurate reports and statistics related to job functions.
  • Must have experience using computers in a work environment as well as experience using standard office productivity software.
  • Must be able to learn new computer systems as needed. Must be able to operate and troubleshoot office technology such as photocopiers, printers, and computer workstations.
  • Good judgment, problem solving, and decision-making skills are necessary to ensure accuracy in a detail-oriented environment, and to ensure quality interactions with library staff and users.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization, to closely follow established procedures, and to perform work requiring considerable attention to detail.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of music literature and reference / research tools in music.
  • One year of clerical and/or library experience in a public service position.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress subject classification.
  • Knowledge of library routine and procedures.

Working Environment

  1. Standard office environment.
  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

Monday - Thursday 6pm - 10pm and Sundays from 1pm - 5pm.
