Job Description

Position Overview 
Plans, organizes, directs, and manages all District local history and genealogy library services conforming to the policies established by the Trustees and Director.  Organizes outreach programs and special activities. Continually seeks and finds ways to promote increased use of the District libraries and local history and genealogy materials.  Manages the District’s Local History Digital Archive. Works with District librarians and community groups to develop and expand services.  The work requires that the employee have excellent judgment as well as knowledge, skill, and ability in general public library services. May assume responsibility for all staff and the building in the absence of the Branch Manager. May oversee Technical Services functions in the absence of the Technical Services Manager. 


Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills  

Required:  
• Completion of a Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution. 

Preferred: 
• One year professional library experience working in Reference/Adult Services/Special Collections. 
• Advanced knowledge of the information needs of adults and the library materials and services appropriate to Special Collections. 
• A working knowledge of computer applications for general library services, archives, and special collections. 
• Extensive knowledge of preservation and archival practices either through coursework or experience. 
• Ability to perform original cataloging in OCLC of all material formats, including rare materials. 
• Familiarity with Islandora or similar software and with digital archive metadata standards. 
• Ability to apply professional library principles, methods, and administrative practices to collection development, planning, coordination, and budget management. 
• Ability to establish priorities, develop long range plans, including staffing needs, for the implementation of new services, programs or solutions to problems. 
• Ability to administer the activities of library service to adults, and to supervise the work of others. 
• Ability to perform and supervise reader's advisory, bibliographic and other professional library services offered by associates and volunteers. 
• Artistic skills used in creating posters, displays desirable.  
• Willingness to serve as a liaison to community agencies, particularly the Eagle County Historical Society. 
• Ability to communicate and to prepare and deliver brief, concise and attractive reports of library services and facilities both orally and in writing.  
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, officials of other agencies and the general public. 
• Ability to work well with people of all ages. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
• Provides training for library staff and volunteers who assist patrons in Local History and Genealogy Services. 
• Participates in the development of operating policies and procedures for Local History services. 
• Participates in library special projects as necessary. 
• Provides assistance and instruction in use of OPAC and in meeting patrons’ information requests and needs. 
• Designs, schedules and implements local history or genealogy programs. 
• Develops and coordinates local history outreach programs. 
• Selects reference books, magazines, audiovisual materials, etc. related to the District’s Local History Collection. Evaluates collection annually.  
• Works closely with Technical Services to coordinate cataloging of local history materials. 
• Interacts with other professionals and cooperates with educational and cultural organizations serving adults. 
• Cooperates with local educational institutions in research assignments. 
• Promotes the Local History Collection and prepares book lists, reading lists, bibliographies, flyers and other public relations materials about local history. 
• Oversees the organization and presentation of local history displays. 
• Works with the District Public Relations Librarian to promote Local History and Genealogy programs, and contributes to the District newsletter 
• Is responsible for the general maintenance and appearance of the Local History/Genealogy areas and verifies that all equipment is working properly. 
• Monitors all line items in the Local History/Genealogy Services budget to ensure funds are expended at an appropriate rate on a monthly basis. 
• Keeps informed on trends in library services, preservation and archives; participates in professional organizations; attends continuing education professional workshops and conferences.   
• May participate in the recruitment, training and development of library support staff members. 
 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities 
• Performs general library work as needed, participating in serving on Reference and Circulation desk rotations, assisting patrons, shelving, maintaining computers, and answering phone calls. 
• Supervises personnel and volunteers as assigned. 
• Participates in staff meetings and training sessions.
