Job Description

The purpose of the Lead Librarian- Adult Services is to promote engagement and increase circulation, visits, program attendance and digital resource use for all adults. This position works within the User Services Department to provide district-wide leadership in the planning and implementation of adult related programs and services.

The Lead Librarian - Adult Services reports to the Manager of User Services. This position works as a team member in the User Services department. This position collaborates with staff from library branches and with support services.  This position provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, ability level or background.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts in the capacity of a lead reference librarian, answers difficult reference questions, uses library automation systems for customer and item related tasks, and assists customers in using library materials.
  • Provides library services and professional support to the public; responds to inquiries and reference requests; performs reference searches and provides resources or referrals; reviews and resolves customer service issues. Assists Reference Librarian with monitoring and responding to Ask Us inquiries received through the library website.
  • Monitors assigned library programs, prepares library plans, and makes recommendations regarding library and community needs and library district promotion.
  • Supervises the programming and development activities of Reference Librarian and Adult Literacy Administrator, providing guidance and support as needed. This includes supporting efforts to develop and expand community partnerships, services and district collaboration.
  • Supervises the programming and development activities of the Program and Outreach Specialists who provide programs and resources for aging adults and technology support to all adults, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Conducts ongoing needs assessments to expand programs, introduce new initiatives and seek grant funding to support services and programs.
  • Researches grant opportunities and applies for grants to support adult-focused programs and initiatives.
  • Ensures creation of monthly program offerings that support the library district’s monthly themes.
  • Leads planning and implementation of the annual Adult Winter of Reading Program.
  • Leads the Rawlings library programmatic support for All Pueblo Reads program.
  • Drives strategic community outreach and support for economic and workforce development.
  • Manages the Doris Kester Nonprofit Resource Center by making recommendations for database and collection development, working with Community Relations to keep webpage updated, attending quarterly Candid Funding Information Network meetings, coordinating outreach to local business and nonprofit groups, facilitating training for individuals or nonprofits seeking grants through the Foundation Directory Online, and training staff on available nonprofit resources.
  • Stays current on trends and best practices in public libraries.
  • Researches and maintains program statistics and creates reports and presentations.
  • Drives strategic community outreach.
  • Oversees the coordination of adult volunteers in the User Services Department at Rawlings library.
  • Leads public notary program at the Rawlings Library.  Ability to become a certified notary preferred.
  • Leads special projects.
  • Provides library tours.
  • Provides direct customer service for approximately 30% of hours worked, using the facilitated customer service model to provide service at the point of need.
  • Provides advice to readers, helps locate materials, assists with research, instructs customers on how to use computers, digital and e-resources.
  • This position will be assigned the role of Person in Charge (PIC) at the Rawlings Library on a regular basis to respond to any escalated customer service, emergency, or security issues and will work closely with the security officer on duty.
  • Supports team efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and staff by maintaining awareness of surroundings and working in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled department meetings.  Attends All Staff Development Days and other training sessions to acquire new skills and to stay current on all information that is pertinent to PCCLD.
  • Reads daily organizational communications from intranet, e-mail, newsletters and print announcements.  Stays current on all library services, programs and events throughout the district. Regularly accesses electronic time keeping, payroll and personnel employee access systems.
  • Cross trains and provides back-up coverage for the Manager of User Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

Hiring Salary:$50,000 - $55,000 annual

   QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. Must have a minimum of two years of public library experience. Experience working as a librarian is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to plan and coordinate the work of staff in order to accomplish library goal and objectives.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of print and electronic reference tools and knowledge of research techniques.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills; resolves conflict with tact and discretion.
  • Able to lead groups and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences and age levels.
  • Must exhibit creativity in developing new and interesting programs for adults.
  • Ability to conduct complex reference interviews, to analyze requests and to apply research skills to locate specialized information or provide customers with alternative sources.
  • Ability to become a certified notary strongly preferred.
  • Must possess strong computer skills with the ability to use a variety of electronic and digital devices and e-resources; possesses a keen interest in using and learning new technologies.
  • Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions.

Physical Requirements:   Must be able to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push /pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 50 pounds.

Other Requirements:  Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings and weekends.  Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background investigation.  Must have a clean driving record, Colorado Driver’s License and auto insurance.
