Job Description

 

As the head executive for the Library academic unit, the Library Dean reports directly to the Provost in representing and promoting the interests of the staff and faculty of the unit. The Dean leads the four departments in the Dayton Memorial Library (Access Services, Research & Instruction, Discovery & Collections, and Archives & Digital Collections) as well as the Learning Commons and Student Disability Services departments which are physically located outside of the Dayton Memorial Library. The Dean develops and carries out a strategic vision for a vibrant research and learning community and implements key student success initiatives. The Dean administers innovative, inclusive, and traditional academic support services and library collections that are integral to the University’s mission.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership 50%

Further the work of the Diversity and Outreach Committee.

Advocate and articulate a vision for integrating culturally-relevant student support services within the Library.

Serve on committees and promote a culture of collegial governance. Develop strong, collaborative relationships with other University administrators.

Pursue knowledge of current developments in library and higher education discourses by consistently engaging with scholars, librarians, professional organizations, and industry publications. Contribute to the field through robust scholarly activity.

Advance the distinctive character, mission, and scholarship of Jesuit, Catholic higher education.

Support all campus students in providing services through the Library.

Create an active strategy to promote Library services to the University community, including non-traditional and distance learners, first-generation college students, diverse student populations, faculty, and staff.

Develop and implement a clear strategic vision and operational and financial plan to carry out the goals and priorities that advance the University mission and the Library mission and vision.

Operational Leadership 25%Represent the Library in University level meetings including Deans’ Council and Deans’ Operational Council.

Implement measures of assessment for the Library in order to evaluate progress of, and alignment with, the strategic vision.

Partner with Physical Plant, ITS, Campus Safety, and other campus units as necessary to provide appropriate oversight of library facilities.

Provide mentorship and professional growth opportunities to early career faculty and staff.

Lead the creation and implementation of activities and create a culture that promotes the professional growth of the library faculty and staff. 

Lead an academic unit that includes ranked and unranked faculty and staff, fostering professionalism, diversity, inclusion, and a positive work environment for all members of the Library.

Collaborate with the Provost in the development and management of Library budgets in alliance with University-wide plans and goals; act as chief fiscal officer of the Library.

External Representation 25%

Represent and promote the University and the Library to national scholarly communities and the general public, including those communities that are historically underserved by university libraries.

Cultivate external relationships with donors, and pursue fundraising opportunities for the Library, In cooperation with the Office of University Advancement.

Act as a local and national leader in collaborative librarianship by participating actively in the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and with other librarians, library organizations, businesses, and publishing agencies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Experience:

Demonstrated experience with financial management of a library

Record of peer-reviewed scholarly work.

Expertise supporting traditional undergraduate, graduate, and non-traditional, working adult students; familiarity with distance education programs and delivery systems.

Previous experience interacting with diverse and historically marginalized communities; demonstrated success in working with diverse populations of students; commitment to support of Library’s Diversity and Outreach Committee.

A demonstrated record of commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering a student-centered library experience, in addition to experience in addressing accessibility issues.

A demonstrated record of increasing responsibility in an academic leadership position, with ability to lead library faculty and staff in the creation of welcoming and productive learning environments.

Education:

ALA-accredited Master of Library Science, Master of Information Science, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fundraising experience.

Experience managing a library renovation and budget.
