JOB DUTIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Youth Services Librarian will work under the guidance and direction of the Youth Services Coordinator to provide professional level library services that meet the education, recreation, and informational needs of the community, with a focus on youth services and early childhood development. The librarian will also supervise and train Youth Services Technicians, Youth Services Clerks and/or other staff as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with area teachers and educators to plan and lead school group visits and tours.
Utilize a variety of print and online resources to stay informed about current trends in children's literature, selecting and ordering appropriate materials for the juvenile collection, and planning relevant and inclusive youth programs for a diverse community.
Manage and instruct Technicians and Clerks in the organization of tours, compilation of statistics, and presentations of library procedures and materials for diverse age groups, including teacher orientations.
Plan, promote, coordinate, and conduct innovative programs for youth which may include programs for tweens and teens. Evaluate program effectiveness, make last-minute changes to content and/or program material, and make decisions under pressure.
Assist patrons of all ages with general and specialized reference queries, offer training and guidance on utilizing automated library systems, and promote library resources and programs for youth.
Participate in professional meetings and conferences and implement new ideas by presenting and training staff on them.
Maintain memberships in professional and regional library associations and provide training to staff concerning continued library development.
Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of Youth Services Technicians, Youth Services Clerks, and other staff as assigned. Provide training on library methods and techniques and assist in evaluating the performance of non-professional employees.
Interpret library goals, objectives and policies to patrons.
Perform basic duties in other areas of the library or outreach locations as needed.
Manage the Youth Services Department in the absence of the Youth Services Coordinator.
This position may also include serving as a member of various employee committees and acting as a member of the Library's core interview group.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. This position will work a varied schedule, including some evenings, weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS
This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
Background check is required.
Must have ability to work with a diverse population and various age groups.
Must have ability to guide, direct and supervise library staff.
Must be able to work on a team and provide mature leadership.
Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or an equivalent combination of education and related professional experience in service to children. Supervisory experience and experience working with children in a library setting is preferred.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.
Extensive experience, training, or study in the field of children's literature and/or early childhood education.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs.
Thorough knowledge of library collection classification, selection tools and techniques.
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision skills.
Must have excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize and meet deadlines.
Must have the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds.
Bilingual skills (Spanish, Navajo) helpful but not required.
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city personnel and the public.
Experience with STEM technologies desired but not required.
Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.
