End date: May 26, 2023
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 3:30pm
Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour

Description:
This full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will supervise operations and student staff in an
integrated public services environment and provide public service by assisting patrons and solving complex problems for library users.
Working hours:
- Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Supervision received:
- This position reports to the Head of the Science and Engineering Library.
Supervision exercised:
- 3.5 FTE student workers (14-15 students)
Responsibilities:
- Oversee processing and lending of library materials in the Science and Engineering Library and coordinate branch services with other library units.
- Train and oversee library staff and student assistants in the application and interpretation of circulation services, policies, and procedures established for the UMass Amherst Libraries.
- Provide information services at an integrated service desk and respond thoroughly and accurately to patron queries.
- Open branch and respond to maintenance and other emergencies within the library and resolve problems involving aspects of the physical building, personal safety, and security of library materials.
- Provide basic hardware and software technology support. Assist users in the effective use of scanners, readers, printers, copiers, UCard Transfer stations, and other hardware devices.
- Collaborate and work in conjunction with other Science and Engineering Library staff to ensure coverage and the provision of services during library hours of operation. Provide backup and cross-train as needed with other unit staff.
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, technology and equipment used in library work, including familiarity with Library of Congress classification system.
- Considerable customer service experience is required along with a high ability to interact with technology and equipment in an academic context.
- Ability to clearly articulate policies, processes and procedures tactfully and professionally both orally and in writing.
- Strong service orientation and the ability to meet the public graciously and tactfully.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
- Ability to organize and document workflows and procedures.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in an academic library setting preferred.
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- Four-year college degree, or high school diploma or equivalent plus two years of academic library experience.
- One year of supervisory experience involving training, oversight, and assignment of work in a fast-paced, technology-intensive service setting.
- Successful prior experience in a position requiring excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including tactfulness, resilience, and the ability to overcome obstacles and provide creative solutions.
