Job Description

When open on Saturdays: Monday-Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and every third Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the following Friday off.

Definition

The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a professional and self-starting librarian interested in being a key member of a progressive, dynamic library system. We seek an outgoing, innovative, collaborative, flexible, and service-oriented librarian to provide reference services, public programming, and marketing for library adult services and events. Our culture of “Yes!” has resulted in a large growth in programs and services for grateful and increasingly engaged library patrons and local decision makers. We are fortunate to be in a state-of-the-art new building, and our work from FY23-27 will be guided by a new Strategic Plan. This is an exciting opportunity to help us continue to expand our programming and communications to the community.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services.

Job Environment

Work is performed under typical office and library conditions. The work environment is moderately quiet. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate. Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Daily contact with library patrons by phone, in person, and in writing.

Essential Functions

Works in support of the Head of Reference & Adult Services to plan, market, execute, and evaluate a robust schedule of library programs targeted at adult audiences and reflecting a wide range of topics, including but not limited to author events, music and arts programs, book clubs, and local history events. Plans programs that are responsive to diverse community needs and interests. May be the primary staff person responsible for running certain library programs. Identifies and applies for occasional grant funding to support programming efforts.

Under the direction of the Head of Reference & Adult Services, executes library marketing campaigns from beginning to end for adult programs and services, including creating graphic images and text copy for digital and print, managing library social media accounts, and disseminating information to appropriate channels and partners.

Provides general library reference services, reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service, and technological instruction to a diverse public, primarily adults and teenagers. May provide desk coverage for the Teen Room as needed.

Participates in professional development to gain additional knowledge and skills, and shares new knowledge and skills with colleagues as appropriate.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

A Master’s degree in library and information sciences from an ALA-accredited school required. Applicants with a degree in progress and some relevant work experience may be considered.

Experience with program planning, graphic design, and/or marketing preferred.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, and current trends and resources in reference and adult services. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite; graphic design software like Canva; basic technology support and troubleshooting.

Ability and Skill: Familiarity, comfort, and skill with library digital media services and other library databases, as well as blogging tools, graphic design, social media, and website content maintenance. A strong public service commitment. Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Must be comfortable with public speaking and giving presentations.

Physical Requirements

Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
