Job Description

The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) Libraries invites applications from collaborative and innovative candidates for the position of Special Materials and Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian! Special Materials and Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian is a non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor position that performs original and complex copy cataloging for a variety of formats with a primary emphasis on unique materials that may include rare books, maps, and special collections, archival, and government information materials. This individual serves as the Libraries’ continuing resources cataloging expert and performs original and complex copy cataloging for continuing resources. They participate in the development, evaluation, and documentation of policies, procedures, and workflows related to the cataloging of unique materials and all continuing resources and serve as a contact between RDS and other library units in these areas. This individual will also contribute to the implementation of the FOLIO library services platform and the team’s Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) cataloging efforts and linked data initiatives.

As a member of the University Libraries faculty, the Special Materials and Continuing Resources Cataloging Librarian will be expected to maintain a record of scholarly research/creative work, participate in professional service activities, and actively engage in faculty governance. This position has the opportunity to work in a hybrid capacity. This is a non-tenure track, faculty position that will be hired at the Teaching Assistant Professor rank and report to the Lead of the Special Materials Cataloging Section. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging for a variety of formats according to established national and local guidelines and standards; primary emphasis will be placed on special collections of unique materials that may include rare books, maps,archives, and government information materials. Duties may also include cataloging other types of resources depending on RDS needs.
  • In coordination with the SMC Section Lead, participates in the development, evaluation, and documentation of policies, procedures, and workflows related to the cataloging of unique materials in collaboration with RDS members and other library units. Serves as a resource for other library units to resolve cataloging problems or questions regarding unique materials.
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print and electronic continuing resources, according to established national and local guidelines and standards.
  • Serves as the Libraries’ expert in cataloging continuing resources, directing the development, evaluation, and documentation of policies, procedures, and workflows related to continuing resources cataloging in collaboration with RDS members and other library units. Serves as the liaison between RDS and other library units to resolve continuing resources cataloging problems or questions.
  • Performs maintenance and enhancement of serials catalog records and monographic analytic records in both OCLC and the local catalog; creates and edits item and check-in/holdings records for continuing resources as well as item records for monographic sets and series.
  • Serves as the Libraries’ CONSER coordinator and actively contributes to the RDS’s Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) efforts, including creating and modifying BIBCO monograph records, CONSER serial records, and NACO and SACO authority records. This position also creates Cataloging in Publication (CIP) monograph records in support of RDS’s CIP Cataloging Partnership Program participation.
  • Actively contributes to the development and implementation of the FOLIO library services platform, including participation in FOLIO project-level groups like the Metadata Management Special Interest Group (SIG).
  • Participates in the RDS’s linked data initiatives.
  • Pursues an active program of continuing education to remain current in national cataloging standards and technology.
  • Maintains a consistent record of professional service and research/creative work.
  • Participates in building a diverse and inclusive campus environment.
  • Participates in faculty governance.
  • Participates in Libraries meetings, activities, and events and represents the RDS in appropriate venues.

What We Can Offer

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) non-tenure track faculty member at the Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor rank depending on experience. The salary range is $67,000-$77,000.

What We Require

Please address each of these qualifications in your application materials:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • One or more years of relevant professional cataloging experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends and best practices in both traditional and linked data resource description.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and tools such as MARC, RDA, and a variety of controlled vocabularies.
  • Experience cataloging in OCLC and an Integrated Library System (ILS) cataloging module.
  • Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly work, and professional achievement.

What You Will Need

  • Experience cataloging on unique materials such as rare books, maps, and special collections, archival, and government information materials.
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more non-English languages.
  • Knowledge of PCC (NACO, BIBCO, SACO, or CONSER) and OCLC Enhance standards.
