Job Description

Job Summary

The Manager of Community Library Initiatives is responsible for identifying opportunities, advising on strategy, proposal development, recommending solutions, implementing project plans, fostering external partnerships and responding to the vision, mission, values, and strategic goals of the Library District.

The position will provide high-level support to the Director of Community Libraries and coordinate the work of District Managers and Community Libraries. Provide internal communication for the Director and operate in an environment characterized by involvement in broad District-wide issues and interact with a variety of internal and external stakeholders on complex, confidential, and sensitive matters.

Oversee the creation and development of strategic initiatives for the system and collaborate across community libraries and departments. Coordinate, lead, and assist with projects, initiatives and daily activities that require knowledge of information concerning staffing, funding priorities, new and emerging Library directions, and other strategic Library objectives. Assist Leadership Team with special projects and advancement of initiatives across the Library District.

Essential Functions

     Project Coordination:

  1. Provide leadership and direction in managing, documenting and implementing all aspects of assigned projects.
  2. Organize and develop project timelines to ensure deadlines are met.
  3. Oversee tasks assigned to others to ensure projects are moving forward.
  4. Initiate and organize meetings pertaining to projects.
  5. Provide expertise and creative thinking to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to complex, routine, and non-routine questions.
  6. Seek input and participation from stakeholders across the System and community on initiatives.
  7. Work closely with Community Engagement staff to coordinate effective communication to Sno-Isle Libraries staff and external partnerships.

     Emerging Service Identification:

  1. Identify emerging service opportunities for the Library District.
  2. Design and develop systems, processes, and communication strategies and provide recommendations to Leadership Team.
  3. Collaborate with District Managers to operationalize emerging services into the department and ensure the vision, mission, values, and strategic goals of the Library District are accomplished.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Deliver presentations to a variety of groups and officials.
  2. Assist with special projects as required.
  3. Attend meetings, trainings, and workshops as assigned.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision

The position reports to the Director of Community Libraries.

  1. Thorough knowledge of library operation and administration & Library District policies and procedures.
  2. Thorough knowledge of Project Management.
  3. Thorough knowledge of principles of supervision and overseeing the work of others.

  13. Ability to operate relevant computer systems including hardware and software, such as Microsoft Word, electronic databases, e-mail, and internet navigation in addition to other office equipment and security systems.
  14. Ability to travel to community libraries, community events, and various other sites.

Education and Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position can be acquired by a combination of experience and education including:

  1. These skills and abilities typically are acquired through a combination of experience and training including a master’s degree in library information science from an ALA-accredited college or university. Must provide a Washington State Librarian certificate within 60 days of hire.
  2. At least six years of related practice in librarianship.
  3. At least two years of Project Management experience.

Most of the work of incumbents is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to operate computers for extended periods of time. The incumbent may occasionally move objects or materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

The incumbent must regularly communicate with coworkers and members of the public. Incumbents are required to be cordial, helpful, and skilled in interpersonal relations with others both in the public and within the Library District. Activities sometimes occur outside the regular business day including evenings and weekends and require travel to branches and other locations within the Library District's two-county service areas to meet with public groups and library staff. To accomplish this travel, the incumbent must be able to drive and hold a valid Washington State driver's license or to make independent arrangements for such transportation.

  1. Describe your project management experience for a large public library system. Include the steps you took to engage community stakeholders and consultants.
  2. Share your experience working with members of a senior management team.
  3. Describe a situation when you had to build consensus with a team. What steps did you take and how did you reach a consensus?
