Job Description

The Acquisitions & Cataloging Technician is a full-time staff position in the Collection Management unit at the Arthur Lakes Library of Colorado School of Mines. In collaboration with the Head of Collections Management, this role helps develop the vision and strategic goals for library print and electronic acquisitions and overall collection management.

The Acquisitions & Cataloging Technician assists all Collection Management staff through work tasks pertaining to physical or electronic collections including maintenance, inventory, shifting, and weeding. The position manages the physical processing of new materials such as books and serials. The position also participates in copy cataloging, handling routine catalog maintenance tasks, resolving cataloging problems of varying levels of difficulty, may assist with metadata work for digital collections, and possesses knowledge of metadata standards and schemas (e.g., MARC, Dublin Core). This position hires and supervises student workers as work requires.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
Three years of library experience.


Preferred Qualifications
Experience

  • Experience in collection management or technical services
  • Experience with metadata standards and schemas (e.g. MARC21, Dublin Core) as well as cataloging tools and resources

Knowledge

  • Familiarity with an integrated library system, preferably the Ex Libris product Alma
  • Understanding of best practices and emerging trends in collections, procurement, and scholarly publishing in academic research libraries

Skills

  • Ability to work with highly detailed information in an online environment
  • Demonstrated computer skills
