Job Description

The Adult Services Assistant provides program support and assistance to the Adult Programming and Collections Librarian. The person in this role assists patrons by responding to a wide variety of questions and requests, builds partnerships in the community, and provides outreach services for the library district. 

Outreach: Responsible for Lobby Stops at adult residential centers in the community. This job function includes performing reader’s advisory services and providing offsite circulation functions. Further, responds to the needs and interests of seniors in the community. 

Programming: Assist in the planning, conducting, and evaluation of library programs for adults of all ages. 

Marketing: This position will be responsible for supporting marketing efforts for programming and outreach services. This includes serving as backup for compiling and distributing marketing materials for adult programs and services across multiple platforms. 

Customer Service: Offer patron assistance on the use of computers, computer programs, databases, printing, scanning, electronic devices, and photocopier. Provide suggestions to readers and assist patrons on the use of the library catalog. Place unavailable library items on hold and/or request interlibrary loan for customers and staff. 

Collection Development: Assist Adult Programming and Collection Development Librarian with maintenance of the adult material collections as needed.  

Other duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience Required:

Requires a two-year college degree or equivalent coursework and/or an equivalent amount of library experience. Must have a personal vehicle that can be used for Lobby Stops and outreach visits. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

● Experience with various online business resources highly preferred. 

● Experience with public speaking and making presentations to the general public required. 

● Demonstrated ability to think logically, exercise initiative, and act in the best interest of the library district. 

● Effective at working with a wide range of constituencies. 

● Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

● Ability to work in a self directed environment with minimal guidance. 

● Actively participates in professional development and training opportunities. 

Work Environment:

Position requires being up and moving around the Library and at times stationary at work station. The job requires stooping, bending, squatting, stretching. Occasional lifting, such as three or four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 25 pounds) may be required. Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (with keyboard, shelving), eye-hand coordination, data entry and computer use for accessing information. Should be conscious of appropriate ergonomics and work station setup. Professional and service-oriented work environment, open to the public throughout the week including nights and weekends.
