Job Description

Position: Library Manager
Locations: Paonia Library
Hours: Full time = 36 hours/week
Pay Range: $20.35 – $28.70/hour, with benefits, including health insurance options, life insurance, sick leave, vacation/holiday leave, retirement options and employee assistance.

Summary
Library Manager provides shared leadership and support to library staff by anticipating and meeting the needs of library users in the most visible way, providing the best possible programs and services to the library community, helping to provide users with organized and expedient access to collection resources. Works collaboratively with the Library District’s management team by demonstrating leadership qualities and behavior and aligning efforts with the vision and direction of the Library District.

Responsibilities
Library Operations: Provides effective and efficient oversight of daily administrative operations of the library, including, but not limited to, staff scheduling, monthly financial reports, monthly board reports, ordering of supplies, submission of marketing jot forms. Receives and responds to requests, complaints, concerns and general inquiries from the public and patrons, provides resolution accordingly and refers matters of importance to the District Director.

Public Services: Ensures that the library provides quality customer service in the circulation of materials and in the support and assistance to users of the library’s public access technology, electronic devices and wireless network. Ensures that the library provides quality outreach services that engages and meets the needs and interests of the community and increases use of library services, and reaches underserved populations. Ensures that the library provides quality programming opportunities for information, development of special skills, entertainment and lifelong learning for all age groups. Ensures that the library provides quality patron training opportunities to meet lifelong learning needs of users and to build their skills. Ensures that the library provides quality reader’s advisory assistance and access to reference resources.

Staff Supervision and Training: Works with District Director to effectively recruit and select new library staff; to develop and implement a culture that supports ongoing learning; and to develop effective methods to evaluate learning initiatives. Leads and empowers library staff to deliver effective, high-quality library services. Fosters staff growth and opportunity through mentoring. Promotes a performance-based culture that aligns learning goals and objectives with desired outcomes. Establishes effective strategies for performance management. Works appropriately in recruiting volunteers and providing for their effective training and supervision.

Community Relations and Marketing: Works with Communications Coordinator to help promote the library as a center of lifelong learning for the community; to maintain visibility in the community by networking with organizations that promote libraries; to help encourage awareness of a dialogue about the library and community needs by occasionally speaking publicly at programs, events and meetings throughout the community; to help build relationships with community organizations; to help use multiple formats and channels to communicate with library users, potential users and other stakeholders; to assist with the periodic review of the community for opportunities to align needs with library services; and to help identify, analyze and prioritize target markets and audiences, and help determine how best to promote library services that can effectively serve them.

Library Facility: Works with District Director and library staff to provide clear paths and clear signage to navigate through the building; to monitor the use of the building and make changes to improve the user’s experience; to identify maintenance, service, and repair needs; and to address safety issues.

Laws, Policies and Procedures: Works with the District Director and the Library District management team to understand, apply and explain applicable laws; to assist in developing policies and procedures based on the Library District’s mission and user needs to guide efficient and effective Library District operations; and to assist in creating policies and practices to ensure safety and security.

Collection Development: Works with Collections & Systems Administrator to assist in building and maintaining a collection of high-quality and relevant resources in many formats based on a determination of community needs and to help ensure that the collection is current, useful and in good condition.

Friends of the Library: Works with the District Director and Communications Coordinator to understand and sustain the library’s role and relationship with the Friends of the Library by working with the Friends of the Library to promote the library within the community.

Librarianship: Strives for effectiveness and efficiency through clear communication, strong relationships, ethical behavior, and the flexibility to be a leader, team player, and lifelong learner. Attends staff development days and other trainings to acquire new skills and knowledge and to stay current on all information that is pertinent to the Library District. Stays current on trends that impact public libraries, including technology trends.

Core Library Values: Understands and acts in accordance with the basic values and ethics of library service. Supports intellectual freedom. Familiar with Colorado Library Law and endorses it. Knows and follows the Library District’s policies and procedures. Understands and adheres to the mission, values, and vision of the Library District.

Qualifications
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Education: Master’s degree in related field.

Required Experience and Abilities: Three (3) years or more of public library experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated ability to create a positive work environment and to build a cohesive team. Knowledge of library-specific software, reference and reader’s advisory services, and literature for children, teens, and adults. Proven success in establishing community partnerships and working with all age groups. Proficiency in technology, electronic devices, computers, the internet, Microsoft office Suite, and other office equipment.

Work Demands
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends. Must be able to travel in and out of the Library District by having, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license and by having reliable transportation with proof of automobile insurance. Must be able to stand and/or walk for 4 hours or more per day; bend and stretch without limitation; lift up to 35-50 pounds at a time; push a loaded book cart weighing up to 150 pounds. Tolerate dust and mold associated with books. Walk, stand, sit, type, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, talk, listen, see, hear, grasp, pull, bend, and climb. Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background investigation. Must complete a technology skills assessment and a shelving skills assessment.
