The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver’s most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials.We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. The Mobile Services Department’s reach spans across the city of Denver, meeting community members where they are to provide library services and access. Under the umbrella of the Communications and Community Engagement department, the Mobile Services division delivers library programs and services through a mobile fleet to increase library access to target populations, including children, teens, and older adults. We provide library services and resources including intergenerational programming to a diverse customer base outside library locations and create positive experiences for library customers visiting the bookmobile by checking out books and other materials. 

DPL is hiring an Operations Supervisor in the Mobile Services Department to help in the strategic deployment of outreach throughout the city of Denver. In this position, you will supervise Library Program Associate staff and oversee daily operations of the bookmobiles. You will strategize and collaborate on staffing deployment for the Mobile Services Department, including participation in special events, while utilizing mobile tools, including driving large vehicles, to increase library presence in the community. The ideal candidate must be committed to providing a welcoming environment for all customers with the ability to foster curiosity by promoting our services throughout the community.

As a supervisor, you will use an equity-driven approach as you determine work priorities and develop schedules to provide staff coverage; work with direct reports on performance and engagement as a group and individually; develop work-related goals; provide performance feedback in one-on-one settings, as well as yearly performance reviews; coach for improvement; and oversee time cards and leave requests. This position works closely with the Community Outreach Manager to conduct hiring interviews and select high quality candidates that represent a wide array of perspectives and life experiences, and serve as person-in-charge in the branch Community Outreach Manager’s absence. In this position, you will lead the maintenance and safety best practices of our bookmobiles. This role will work with community service providers, department staff, and library staff throughout the city to help plan strategic bookmobile outreach across Denver.

  • Ability to safely operate large vehicles.
  • Knowledge of presenting and providing library services to customers with varying levels of experience and knowledge.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a  positive manner including setting boundaries and safety expectations with staff and community members.
  • Including the ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and community.
  • Ability to thrive working in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups.
  • Experience with program design and evaluation.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment with continuous lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs and moving heavy carts in tight spaces.
  • Much of this work is done in an outdoor environment.
  • Experience with event planning and community partnership building.
  • Knowledge and experience with community engagement practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the capability to provide equitable, trauma informed and empathetic customer service drawn from lived experiences and knowledge of EDI concepts and practices.
  • Ability to oversee vehicle maintenance to ensure a welcoming environment for customers and staff.
  • Ability to coordinate and implement emergency preparedness standards to ensure a welcoming environment for customers and staff.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate library policies to staff and customers.
  • Ability to calmly listen and respond to customers' complaints and emergency situations.
  • Ability to steward all location activities through scheduling and assigning work to ensure service needs are met.
  • Ability to support organizational goals to maintain morale, to coach staff, and implement progressive discipline if necessary.
  • Ability to evaluate staff, set goals and priorities to help staff reach a targeted outcome.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, prioritize and set boundaries.
  • Ability to recruit, train, connect, motivate, and retain an equitably diverse team that is reflective of the community.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care practices.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience Requirement: Supervisory Experience Strongly preferred and 3 years of experience working a Library setting (preferred).

Bilingual Fluency: 2nd Language proficiency (Preferred).

Education: Bachelors Degree required.

Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

This position requires a flexible attitude for working in outreach including a variety of connectivity, bumpiness, motion, climate and environmental factors that could impact working conditions. This includes a large amount of outdoor work. 

The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include weekend and evening hours.

This position is based at the Central Library, which has no free parking. Our business office hours are 8am to 5pm, with occasional evenings and weekends.  

Lifting requirement. 

Second language proficiency preferred.
