Job Description

Executive Director (County Librarian) – Laramie County Library System (WY)

The Laramie County Library System (WY) seeks a confident leader and dynamic professional as its next Executive Director (County Librarian). LCLSis an award-winning library system that sets the bar for service regionally and nationally due in part to the strong support of the County Commission and other County organizations. Named the Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal in 2008, Nancy Pearl told USA Today that Laramie County Library System was one of the top ten libraries in the country to “find a nook and read a book.” Livability.com and mommynearest.com named LCLS as one of the top ten children’s libraries in the United States. Employees enjoy a supportive work culture that invests in their growth. The population served is 102,266 in the county with around 65,061 in the Greater Cheyenne Area. The talented and experienced staff (61.68 FTE) serve over 72,000 registered users with an annual budget of $10.5 million and a 425,000-item collection across three locations (Cheyenne, Burns, and Pine Bluffs) along with a very popular bookmobile. In 2021, voters passed a specific purpose tax to replace the 16-year-old vehicle currently in use with a new vehicle which is expected to roll out in FY2025. LCLS operates in a strong philanthropic environment and is financially supported through property taxes, auto license fees, a portion of the county’s one-cent sales tax, and the Laramie County Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that organizes fundraising efforts on behalf of the library. Key initiatives include ongoing assessment of the service area in relation to its branches and growth in the region, determining the best use of new endowment funds in accordance with their designated purpose, and building an organizational culture that fully activates the talent and creativity of its staff.

Located in the Southeastern corner of Wyoming, Cheyenne, and Laramie County serve as the gateway to the West. The most populous city in the state, Cheyenne provides an eclectic mix of amenities, amusements, and an authentic culture rooted in the gorgeous environment of the Mountain West. Warren Air Force Base, Laramie County School District #1, and award-winning Cheyenne Regional Medical Center are some of the largest employers in the area and contribute to the county’s economic stability. The Greater Cheyenne Greenway connects parks and neighborhoods with over 40 miles of outdoor recreation while the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens provides treasured gardens, educational opportunities, and enrichment year-round. Residents also enjoy a quick 2-hour drive to nearby Denver and the ski slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
