Job Description

This is a 10-month/year position and starts August 17, 2009. Responsibilities are as follows:  Collaborate with teachers to ensure the library program is fully integrated into the school curriculum.  Conduct weekly classes which may include research, storytimes, booktalks or other activities which have been planned collaboratively with classroom teachers.  Instruct students in the use of online resources, including the library catalog, electronic resources, and Internet research.  Take an active role in encouraging appropriate student behavior in the library.  Instruct teachers in the use of online resources, including the library catalog, electronic resources, and Internet research.  Prepare subject bibliographies for teachers and pull resources to support specific units.  Help children with book selection, reference questions, and research skills.  Ensure that the collection is well-maintained and current through evaluation and selection of print, nonprint, and electronic resources and through regular weeding of outdated materials.  Select materials based on curricular needs, reviews, areas of high need, and requests from students or staff.  Order, catalog and process library materials.  Provide materials through interlibrary loan as needed.  Ensure proper circulation and shelving procedures are followed.  Conduct reader’s advisory with students based on an extensive knowledge of children’s literature, publishing trends, and children’s authors and maintain familiarity with children’s literature through extensive reading and use of reviewing tools.  Keep necessary library records, such as usage statistics.  Maintain online catalog and patron records.  Manage the Lower School library budget in cooperation with the Director of Libraries.  Promote literacy through special programs such as: Children’s Book Week, National Library Week, book lists for summer reading, etc.  Assist in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures.  Supervise parent volunteers.  Explore and participate in professional development options as they relate to the library and its program.  Participate fully as a member of the Lower School faculty and the library team, including faculty and library meetings.  Report to the Director of Libraries and the Lower School Principal.

Colorado Academy actively seeks diversity in its faculty and student body and is particularly interested in applications from members of minority groups.The Lower School Librarian should possess a passion for working with children and children’s literature, strong communication and organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and prioritize work obligations, and the capability to work effectively as part of a team. A Master’s degree in Library Science, Educational Media or Instructional Media is required, as well as significant experience as a children’s librarian. Teaching skills preferred.
