Job Description

Following a complete renovation of its library facilities, Black Hills State University seeks a motivated and dynamic person to serve as Library Director. The Director establishes a vision and provides collaborative leadership for library services, resources, projects, and use of library spaces. This position will build and maintain relationships across BHSU campuses with administration, faculty, students and student organizations, and other campus entities, as well as other libraries and the Spearfish community. Advocating for the role of the library as a partner in meeting the educational mission of the university is of critical importance. This is a 12-month position that reports directly to the provost.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration

  • Lead library strategic planning and projects.
  • Administer and oversee daily operations of the libraries and building use for the other centers and services housed in the E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center.
  • Solve problems related to operations, personnel, policies, patrons, library facilities, services, and resources.
  • Work with faculty, students, and administration to identify needs to maintain and develop library services.
  • Effectively employ project management concepts, software tools and all other needed forms of technology to accomplish projects within the scope, time, cost, and quality.

Personnel and Communication

  • Supervise library staff; assign work duties; mentor and direct staff to improve work performance; train staff; conduct annual evaluations and performance appraisals; make hiring and termination decisions ensuring compliance with HR procedures.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide support for academic research.
  • Participate in appropriate outreach and serve on state library committees and other boards as appropriate.
  • Coordinate work as appropriate with University Advancement, potential donors, and other stakeholders.

Budget and Finance

  • Process and approve purchases in compliance with university and state guidelines.
  • Prepare annual reports and other statistical documentation on libraries in support of evidence-based decision-making and to meet library reporting requirements.
  • Conduct cost/benefit analyses and plan strategically for future expenses and savings; make financial projections; work with various university departments to monitor budgets; work with donors and obtain grants to enhance library collections and funding for projects.
  • Create, modify, and implement plans in needed areas in addition to budget—for example, the development of the electronic and physical collection, educational outreach, use of space, personnel development, creation of policy and practice.

Manage Circulation

  • Supervise student workers, the circulation of book and non-book materials, and the faculty course reserve collection.
  • Maintain circulation data and prepare regular statistical reports.
  • Create and modify policies and procedures as needed.

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Added subject master’s or doctoral degree preferred.
  • At least five years’ experience working in an academic library. Management and/or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
