Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Position Summary

Reporting to Access Services Manager, this position supervises the Main Library Circulation Unit and oversees activities at the Lending Desk, opening and closing library as needed. Delegates work, assists with technology issues, recommends policy changes; oversees customer service environment, ensures coverage and addresses patron concerns. Responsible for Alma circulation and patron database functions. Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and budgets for hourly and work study positions; trains, supervises, and evaluates staff in Circulation Unit; trains new Access staff in all units on the On Call responsibilities at Service Desk. Schedules all Circulation Assistants for the Service Desk and produces training material. Must be available to work Tuesday-Friday 6:30am-2:30pm and Saturdays 8:30am-4:30pm

Essential Functions

  • SUPERVISION: Supervises student worker positions in the Circulation unit. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates these positions; delegates work, provides coaching for performance improvement; oversees technology issues; recommends policy changes. Oversees and organizes unit workflow for all student assistants in the department. Creates a detailed report on student budget projections reflecting current hourly rates and number of hours needed quarterly. Tracks student worker budget throughout the year. 35%
  • TRAINING: Develops, plans, implements training and development for Lending Desk employees in coordination with university and library policies. Assures excellent service is provided to patrons and policies are consistently enforced. Creates and maintains training materials using appropriate software. 10%
  • LENDING DESK: Oversees activities at the Lending Desk, ensuring adequate coverage and addressing patron concerns. Schedules student Circulation Assistants for Lending Desk. Works on-call at the Lending Desk assisting and coaching student employees on Lending Desk activities, utilizing the Alma system to check out and check in library material, collect fines utilizing the credit card machine, answer user questions utilizing the University Libraries website and LibGuide and refer patrons to the appropriate department within the library or DU campus as needed. Forward unresolved concerns to Access Services Manager as soon as possible and communicate Lending Desk concerns and relevant information to the access on call distribution list and other stakeholders within the library. Oversees all Circulation Unit office functions, timesheets, correspondence, reports, technology, etc. 35%
  • GADGETS, SUPPLIES, & WORKFLOWS MANAGEMENT- Responsible for Lending Desks circulating gadgets, ensuring items are properly charged and ready for use, broken items are withdrawn and replaced, and new items are placed in appropriate packaging, barcoded, and readied for circulation. Orders and tracks supplies for Access department (used at service desk, employee workspaces, and shared spaces). Manages Long and Short-term locker rentals. Keeps adequate supply of workflow forms available and organized for department. Creates and maintains signage and pamphlets at the Lending Desk. Manages Lending Desk Lookup Station. 15%
  • LIBRARY LIBGUIDE- Maintains and updates the departments Lending Desk LibGuide to ensure information for staff and student workers is accurate and accessible. 5%

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Customer service experience.
  • Ability to use an ILS and PC.
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.
  • Ability and willingness to troubleshoot office equipment including photo copiers, printers, barcode label makers, and computer terminals.
  • Basic math skills. Must be able to count money, make change in US dollars, and prepare a deposit.
  • Must be detail-oriented with the ability to maintain thorough and accurate reports.
  • Good judgement, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are necessary to ensure accuracy in a detail-oriented environment, and to ensure quality interactions with library staff and users.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and direct the workflow of staff and train staff; experience working in a library; demonstrated organizational skills; leadership potential.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing and producing training materials, knowledge of LC classification system, experience with an integrated library system (ILS), and experience using LibGuides.

Working Environment

  1. Standard office environment.
  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

The work environment is a busy public service desk in an academic library with many projects going on at one time. The department is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety, using workstations equipped with easy access to needed resources and access to the Internet. The unit is one of several working collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.

Physical Activities

  1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
  3. Must be able to lift and move books and book trucks from one area to another.

Work Schedule

Tuesday-Friday 6:30am-2:30pm and Saturdays 8:30am-4:30pm

The salary grade for the position is 6.

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for the position is $19.50 - $20.50.
