Job Description

Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Hiring salary: $70,738. 
Hiring Process: After an initial telephone screening, selected applicants will be scheduled for a panel interview. Applicants should be prepared to present a 10 minute proposal for an adult participatory program for our patrons. For this position, the preferred start date is within four weeks of the job offer. 
 

Position Overview: 
Plans, organizes, directs, and manages library services to adults conforming to the policies established by the Trustees and Director. Organizes outreach programs and special activities. Continually seeks and finds ways to promote increased use of the District libraries and adult materials. Works with District librarians and community groups to develop and expand service to adults. The work requires that the employee have excellent judgment as well as knowledge, skill, and ability in every phase of the public library field. May assume responsibility for staff and the building in the absence of the branch manager. 

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills 

Required:

  • Completion of a Master of Library and Information Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited institution
  • Three years professional adult services library experience

Preferred:

  • Advanced knowledge of the information needs of adults and the library materials and services appropriate to adult library patrons
  • Extensive knowledge of reference resources and adult authors and books, both fiction and non-fiction, past and current
  • Ability to apply professional library principles, methods, and administrative practices to collection development, planning, coordination, and budget management
  • Ability to establish priorities, develop long range plans, including staffing needs, for the implementation of new services, programs or solutions to problems
  • Ability to administer the activities of library service to adults
  • Ability to supervise services to adults as may be offered by associates and volunteers
  • Artistic skills used in creating posters, displays highly desirable
  • Ability to serve as a liaison to community agencies
  • Ability to communicate and to prepare and deliver brief, concise and attractive reports of library services and facilities both verbally and in writing
  • A working knowledge of computer applications for library services
  • Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, officials of other agencies and the general public
  • Ability to work well with people of all ages

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and coordinates adult outreach programs
  • Seeks opportunities to speak and write about the library to promote the use of resources and the attendance at programs in the public forum as directed
  • Works with the District Public Relations Librarian to promote adult programs and activities, and contributes to the District newsletter, blogs, web site, etc.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with Public Relations and/or Collection Development/Reader’s Advisory Librarian for the promotion of District-wide programs, and the preparation of book lists, reading lists, bibliographies, flyers and other public relations materials for adults
  • May train personnel working in Adult Services
  • Participates in the development of operating policies and procedures
  • Participates in planning near and long-range library services
  • Participates in library special projects as required or as necessary
  • Designs, schedules and implements cultural programs for adults
  • Selects or supervises the selection of program topics and presenters
  • Negotiates fees for program providers
  • Selects or supervises the selection of audiovisual materials; and suggests the acquisition of materials for the general adult collection, reference materials, software, online services, etc. for adults.
  • Determines location of audiovisual materials and evaluates collection annually for balance and comprehensiveness
  • Works closely with Technical Services in updating audiovisual materials.
  • Provides assistance and instruction in use of PAC terminals in choosing books and other materials for borrowing and locating reference information
  • Interacts with other professionals and cooperates with educational and cultural organizations serving adults
  • Works cooperatively in the organization and presentation of book displays.
  • Weeds assigned collection and assists with others as needed
  • May assist in weeding the reference and adult collections as needed
  • Responsible for the general maintenance and appearance of the Adult Services areas
  • Prepares the following reports for Administrative personnel: monthly Adult Services report, annual proposed library audiovisual materials budget, and annual collection development plan
  • Monitors all line items in the Adult Services budget to ensure funds are being expended at an appropriate rate on a monthly basis
  • Keeps informed on trends in library services; participates in professional organizations; attends continuing education professional workshops and conferences.  Encourages staff to attend workshops
  • Assists patrons in meeting information requests and needs.
  • Conducts library tours for adults
  • May participate in the recruitment, training and development of library support staff members
  • Coordinates test proctoring services
  • Performs copy cataloging and processing as assigned

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs general library work as needed, participating in serving on Reference and Circulation desk rotations, assisting patrons, shelving, maintaining computers, and answering phone calls
  • Participates in staff meetings and training sessions
  • Examines professional publications and other sources for selection of materials
