Job Description

Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Hiring rate: $21.57/Hour
Hiring Process: After an initial telephone screening, selected applicants will be scheduled for a panel interview. Applicants should be prepared to present a short story time demonstration, as if presented to toddlers and preschoolers including a picture book read aloud and a song.

Position Overview: 
Coordinates or assists with the planning and presentation of library events and activities for children. May coordinate and assist with programs offered in other District libraries. Recommends library books and materials for acquisition or deletion to a professional librarian. Assists with marketing of programs to promote services to children. 

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills 

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work creatively and comfortably with children, parents, teachers, community members, volunteers, and organizations
  • Detail oriented
  • Some positions may require fluency in Spanish language
  • Experience in public library work is preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greets visitors to the library 
  • Performs check in and check out and answers patron questions at service desk
  • Plan and conduct story times and other children's programs as assigned
    Select appropriate books, songs, puppets, fingerplays, etc.
    Update story time collection
    Prepare crafts
    Incorporate early literacy learning techniques
  • Provide assistance and instruction to patrons in choosing books and other materials for borrowing
  • Performs circulation and reference desk duties including morning chores, evening chores and weekend duties
  • Explains library services and policies completely and accurately by telephone, in writing and in person
  • Cooperates with teachers in research assignments and conducts orientation visits for school classes
  • Organizes book displays
  • Responsible for the general maintenance and appearance of the Children's area and verifies that all equipment is working properly
  • Conducts library tours for children, parents, and interested adults
  • Attends workshops as appropriate
  • Performs general library work as needed, participating in serving on Reference and Circulation desk rotations, assisting patrons, shelving, maintaining computers, and answering phone calls
  • Participates in staff meetings and training sessions

Work Environment

  • Library hours require evening and weekend work
  • Makes contacts with the public, schools, other libraries, nonprofits, civic organizations, government agencies and other professional organizations
  • Operates computers and other standard office equipment.  
  • Position regularly interacts with other personnel and the public
